Odysseus wanted to get home desperately so he could see his wife and child. So as they were sailing a noise erupted so terrifying even Zeus would be scared. It was the sound of a charybdis (whirlpool) and the roar of a hideous beast "the Scylla". The men immediately sprang up and drew arms to fight the beast. As the ship lost its way, Odysseus calmed the men and got them back on task. As they were navigating through the water Odysseus gave the order to paddle through the strait. With the Scylla to port and Charybdis on starboard the men paddled with all their strength. The Scylla then made her strike taking 6 of Odysseus six men. The men filled with terror paddled as fast as ever until they were past the 2 beasts. The men then continued on their way still recuperating after such a excrutiating attack. In this tale we learn one valuable lesson “one must have faith to get through the obstacles in life”.

The conflict is sparked by the sound of a whirlpool and the roar of a horrid beast. This creates a eerie and mysterious feeling. It then goes on to show how Odysseus calmed his men and encouraged them in the face of death. This not only shows Odysseus's courage but his love for his men. It goes on to make the reader fall in love with Odysseus character and adds to the readers love for the story. As they go through the strait the men trust Odysseus to get them through even when they lose six of their best companions. This adds to the story by modeling how much people should trust our leaders in our life. Thus gives the reader a feeling of respect when reading. The conflict not only makes the story more interesting but fully intrigues the reader.

Characterization

The main figure in every novel has his own distinct characteristics. In lines 763-764 it states “Well, I walked up and down from bow to stern, trying to put heart into them”. In this example one may observe what kind of leader Odysseus is. He is kind and comforting while reassuring his men to begin paddling them. This single act causes readers to ensue that Odysseus is a great leader who everyone should strive to be like. Another characteristic of Odysseus is he admits his feelings. On line 823 it says “and deathly pity ran me through”. In this we see how he feels remorse and sadness for his men that were being devoured by the Scylla. It not only shows the readers that he is kind but also that he cares for all of his men. This draws readers to want to read more about Odysseus and his epic tales.

Figurative Language

Figurative language is key to any good piece of literature. This is another reason the Odyssey is such a great novel. On line 805-806 it states “the rock bellowing all around, and dark sand raged on the bottom far below”. In this example the use of personification is exquisite. Rocks cannot bellow or talk but the author uses this analogy to add weight to how loud and rough the sea is. He uses this again when it says “dark sand raged” sand cannot be angry but the author uses personification again to emphasize how rough the shore is. These are just some of the ways the author uses figurative language in the novel.

The Charybdis and Scylla episode shows the lowest point stage in the Hero's journey. On line 824 it states “far the worst I ever suffered”. This statement by Odysseus shows how much he suffered and that there was very little hope in this situation. Odysseus even lost 6 of his best men due to this trial. In final this episode it creates an all time low feeling with Odysseus losing his faith and being injured more than ever.

The theme “one must have faith to get through the obstacles in life” is relevant in our lives today. This is clear today more than every because of all the obstacles one faces and without faith he would fall into temptation. In all superhero movies the hero loses faith and he can’t beat his rival until he finds it again. We view the superhero as brave and a great figure but we really learn to love them when they show true faith to beat their nemesis. On figure in real life that shows these characteristics are missionaries. They go all over the world not knowing what is may happen and keep faith in God. There are countless stories you here of their faith and how much suffering they go through. All in all faith is what gets us through at the end of the day and is a powerful lesson taught in the tale of the Charybdis and Scylla.
