They found cities like Dublin, Waterford and Limerick on the Irish coast. These were bases for raids to England and Inner Ireland, but also important trading posts.

English-speaking speakers use many words that have Viking origins, including husband, egg, birthmark, smile, and odd, on a daily basis. The days of the week were also influenced by the Vikings. Thursday is said to have originated from the Viking belief in the Norse god Thor, hence "Thor's day". The pronunciations of their words, theirs, and theirs were also influenced by the Norse grammatical structure. Many words associated with warfare also have Viking influence. Clubs, pillage and slaughter sound and closely resemble their Viking origins of klubba, rannsaka and slatra.

The Vikings: important aspect of their government

In the occupied areas the Vikings tended to create feudal lordships, while in Scandinavia the government took the form of a primitive democracy: each kingdom was divided into districts and within each district all free men met regularly in so-called assemblies. In such assemblies everyone, from the king to the poorest of the peasants theoretically had equal power and equal right to speak at all sessions, which could include discussions on political issues, border disputes or criminal trials. An officer known as the "spokesman for the Law" impartially led the assembly. If in a dispute it was not possible to reach an agreement, a duel or a somewhat tortuous system called "Ordalia" was used: the accused was forced to walk on very fine ice or to hold a red-hot bar. If he was saved, it meant that the Gods were on his side and he was either cleared or proved right.
