This quote from Chapter 3 helps to answer this question: "Leadership is not just about how to behave when we know what to do; rather, it is best seen in the actions we take when we don't know what to do." I try to lead by asking questions! I hardly know all there is to know regarding my position and I have built strong relationships with colleagues in school and across the county by reaching out and using their expertise. I also try to have a positive outlook when approaching my colleagues. Facing a situation with a smile helps to deflect the negative that may come from a situation.

I found a few point about leadership interesting: the idea Leaders aren't afraid to say no, embracing vulnerability and really taking time to enjoy what you do. I think watching peers exemplify these in different degrees shows a natural leadership and example we want to see in our own kids.
As for how I show these, I can honestly say that aspects of what a leader should be I still am working on, but that is the honesty we seek in our leaders, to know they too are human. I try to show and seek new ways to enjoy the learning process with my students and dive into new topics and materials with those around me, even if that means allowing someone else to be the "driver".

In chapter 3 it stated that "Leadership is not just about how we behave when we know what to do: rather, it is best seen in the actions we take when we don't know what to do. This is a great quote because I think a leader is someone even if they do not know the answers they will do whatever it takes to find it. A lot of people can just say well I do not know and leave it there or go and ask someone else. A great leader will take the time to acknowledge they may not have the answer right now but they will circle back with that individual and give them the answers they found. When I do not know an answer I try my best to make sure I ask my team and if they do not know I will go and ask someone else in administration and go back and share my findings with my team. I am not a leader but I try every day to make sure I do what is expressed in the book and that is communicate to students, parents, coworkers, etc.

I believe it is investing in others, encouraging them for greatness, and motivating them. Leaders don't need to wear a patch on their arms to have or show honor. You just have to lead! Be a positive example. I try to do so everyday with my interact with my peers and students. Great leaders find positive qualities in ALL people and help people find ways to shine. Great leaders may even see gifts in others before he/she sees it within themselves.

McCree is a phenomenal teacher and colleague. She balances nurturing and setting high expectations in her classroom that allows the children in her room to proposer and encourages her co-workers to want to level up with her! I appreciate the raw and honest conversations that we have when we are brainstorming how to help students/ situations!

Stinebarger and his approach with students is so encouraging. He pushes his students to do their best and celebrates their successes. He has one particular student who I truly believe NEEDED him this school year, and has grown tremendously socially and emotionally.

Edwards is always looking for ways to support others, wheather it be her students or her co-workers. Any time that I come into her room she finds a way to include me in her lesson, even if that means challenging me to blend sounds with heggerty correctly- learn something new every day, right?! She also reminded me to do this book study, which I appreciate!!

Whitt is an amazing educator, and I find her organization to be extremely helpful when we are partnering together to support students.

Russell, Chastain, Albanese, and Flowe, and the custodial team keep us all afloat!

I definitely agree with the heading on page 59. Leadership doesn't need a title. Some of the best and most impactful teacher leaders I have worked with were not considered the team leaders, PLC leaders or committee leaders. They were TEAMMATES. The type of teammates who lead by example, gave support to all teachers with different backgrounds, and were confident enough to do whatever was best for classroom and their students' families.
After watching these teacher leaders, I try to emulate them in my every day practices as well. I lean on my expertise and my discernment in knowing what is best me and my students. My expertise has been cultivated by watching and learning from others who have spearheaded in this profession.
Days are hard sometimes, so trusting my teacher intuition drives me as an educator AND a leader every day.

One thing that I do is when a situation happens I make sure to acknowledge it with the entire class and then give encouraging words to show my students how they should be treated. This goes along with in the book being empathetic and taking the time to acknowledge how other's feel. Another thing to do is to give examples and allow the students to act out how they can be kind in each scenario/situation. This can go along with modeling forgiveness and showing the students how to support one another with kindness and even easily forgive when someone does something that we do not like.

During P2 lessons, students have the opportunity to learn methods to show kindness in situations. I also give students the chance to apply what they've learned about kindness in their real-time conflicts with peers. I may facilitate their conversations, but I allow them to show independence in their decision-making when handling conflicts. I also shout-out students who show encouragement to others or congratulate others when their classmates receive positive feedback or rewards.

Within the EC resource setting, the older kids I serve have often been on the end of other kids not being kind to them. So in my setting, they are often automatically kind to each other. When someone makes a mistake, there is no judgement and someone is always quick to jump in when help is needed.
If a student is new and feels self conscious or apologizes when they make a mistake, I immediately reassure them that it's fine and that's why we are all here! For the younger kids, I model kindness to each of them and compliment them often when I see it. Again, within the small group setting it all tends to happen naturally among the students because they are all struggling in one way or another and are seeking help from others.

I attempt to model kindness through interactions with students and staff across the building on a daily basis. Sometimes this is recognizing great behavior or an achievement. Sometimes this is showing compassion and kindness when a student is having a tough time. In speech therapy we have lessons on using "kind language" and review social stories that explicitly teach kind interactions (e.g. sharing, no hitting, etc). Finally (and most importantly in my humble opinion :) ) I have specific conversations with students about treating peers with different abilities and disabilities with kindness and respect. I have already seen a HUGE difference in the way some of my general education students talk and interact with the students in our structured learning classrooms following these conversations <3
