         <title>Campaign of Overland </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Description: The Campaign of Overland  was an eight-day war. The commanders were Ulysses S. Grant for the Union and  Robert E. Lee  for the Confederacy. </p><p><br/></p><p>Location:  Spotsylvania Court House.</p><p><br/></p><p>Winners: Indecisive  </p><p><br/></p><p>Casualties: The estimated casualties were 88,000 where 55,000 were from the Union and 33,000 were from the Confederacy. </p><p><br/></p><p>Significance: The Overland Campaign was the beginning of the end for Lee's army and for the Confederacy, as well.</p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Description: The battle of Atlanta was a one-day war. The commanders were William T. Sherman  for the Union and John Bell Hood  for the Confederacy. The total number of forces engaged was 75,301 and 34,863 were for the Union and 40,438  for the confedracy. </p><p><br/></p><p>Location: Fulton County,GA </p><p><br/></p><p>Winner: Union</p><p><br/></p><p>Casualties: The estimated casualties were 9,222 where 3,722 were from the Union and 5,500 were from the Confederacy. </p><p><br/></p><p>Significance: The Atlanta Campaign led to the capture of that critical Confederate city and opened the door for Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's most famous operation—the March to the Sea and the capture of Savannah. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

There were 154,734 forces engaged, 97,382 of which were from the Union's side and 57,352 from the Confederate side. </p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p><p>Location: Spotsylvania County, VA</p><p><br/></p><p>Winner: Confederates</p><p><br/></p><p>Casualties:  The estimated casualties were 30,764.  Where  17,304  were of the Union and 13,460 were of the Confederates. </p><p><br/></p><p>Significance: The victory enabled General Lee to move north into Maryland and invade Pennsylvania. </p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

Where  2,691  were of the Union and 13,846 were of the Confederates. </p><p><br></p><p>Significance:  This forced the Confederacy to give up southern Kentucky and much of Middle and West Tennessee. </p><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

Where  23,049  were of the Union and 28,063 were of the Confederates. </p><p><br/></p><p>Significance:  The battle involved the largest number of casualties of the entire war and is often described as the war's turning point. </p>]]></description>

Where  4,910  were of the Union and 32,363 were of the Confederates. </p><p><br></p><p>Significance: The Union victory secured control of the Mississippi River, effectively splitting the Confederacy in two and significantly weakening their ability to sustain the war effort by cutting off vital supply lines to the western states.</p>]]></description>
