Summary: The hitchhiker, Alex, gets a ride from a truck driver on his journey towards Alaska. The truck driver, Gallien, notices Alex is a bit unprepared and offers him gear that will keep him alive. Alex plans to head into the woods and live in the brush for a while. This idea seems like an amazing one to Alex but not to Gallien. Eventually, Gallien drops Alex off with nothing but the supplies he had, to then be never seen again as he disappears into the snow trail ahead of him.

Analysis: I think Alex should have taken the stuff he was offered. What he was carrying really wasn't enough and I think he will have a hard time staying alive.

#stayinalive # Lifecouldbebetter

Suspicious of what the inside of the bus held, they take a peek inside. What they find is a note and a bag. On the note, they read that Alex had starved to death and was inside the bag they checked. They then rushed to call the authorities where the search of the identity of the body began.

Analysis: I think it was pretty sad to know that Alex went out like that.

Summary: We go about the story of how Chris dubbed his new name of Alex and his impact in the small community that he put himself into. Later on, we find out more about Alex as a person and his past. He lived a rather perfect kind of life where he had a great school he was going to, he grew up in a good home with a rather stable income. He was intelligent and had made it to a great college where he recently graduated before his departure. What he set forth to look for on this adventure was a new home and to find himself.

Analysis: He had everything going for him. I guess he overdid this adventure considering how it turned out.

#goodlife #heneedssomemilk #adventurous

Summary: Here, we pan to the explanation behind Alex and his missing belongings. The reasons why he left precious items such as his Datsun behind. Well after running into problems with it that would require the government getting involved, he decided the smartest choice would be to leave it. Later, the car would be found by the rangers and would be used to help the government make drug busts. How ironic. Alex, now on foot, would resume his journey in which he would almost get heatstroke and die. Luckily he lives and realizes that he might need some money to survive out in the wild. So he goes to work at a Mcdonalds. He was homeless though, so he could not shower and the people at work would realize that he may need some help. So one worker gives him soap to which he gets angered and leaves. Now he lives on the run.

Analysis: Man why didn't he just take the soap. He could have been in a way better position if he had just taken the soap. Now he's a jobless man again on the move with nothing but luck on his side.

#stinky#poordude#Listen #Listeningsaveslives

Summary: This chapter is about the bond between McCandless and a man named Ronald Franz. He was in the army and had lost his family over the time he was serving. He meets McCandless while camping out in Borrego, where we are now. McCandless gets offered a job, but he explains that he needs to go to Alaska for his dream. So then he takes off by jumping onto trains and gets caught by a guard called a bull. At first he gets kicked off but silly goose was like, "lets do it again" and took another train to Seattle but gets arrested. So now in Colton, Franz goes to pick him up.

Analysis: McCandless is really passionate about Alaska. From what I can see now, he does not let anything get in his way. A common pattern is that someone tries to form a bond with him but he always runs away.

#stubborn #Alaskababy #trains

At first, it was pretty neutral but over time, the people around the farm began to grow fond of the man. Connections were being made, and McCandless was beginning to genuinely form a relationship once more. He meets another girl, and reveals that he really doesn't get girls to have sex or that kind of thing, but instead was intimate and chaste like a monk. On his last night, he plays the piano for all of Cartage's folk in a bar and drinks whiskey.

Analysis: I think McCandless sounds like a good man.

Summary: Gallien, the former truck driver who dropped McCandless off in the Alaskan wilderness, comes across a newspaper article that reads about his old comrade's passing. Believing he could help give info on who McCandless was, he calls the number accordingly. This was hard though because many others would put up a front that they knew McCandless. Therefore, it was hard to determine who was giving real information on the body that was found. On another end, Krakauer gives a hand and gives work info from when McCandless used to work with him.

Analysis: Really, if it were not for items like radio and newspapers, McCandless would be a lost cause.

Summary: Krakauer, now back in his tent, is in grief. A storm hits and causes him to stay in his tent for a couple of days. After finishing his weeping, he decides he's gonna smoke his last joint of marijuana. This makes the man hungry, so he starts to cook and light a fire, but the dummy burns down his tent in the process. With no choice left, he gathers all of his courage and heads for the top of the mountain again. This time, after reminiscing about his father, he takes the easier route and fulfills his goal of reaching the top. Afterwards he goes to the bar to drink alone.

Analysis: At the end of the day, Krakauer was able to reach the top of the mountain. Compared to McCandless, Krakauer made his trip and returned alive. Truly, I feel that McCandless did not intend on dying when heading to Alaska. But hopefully soon we will discover what his reason for death was in order to determine if it was suicide.

#Smoke #Fire #Ambitious

Summary: After being transported multiple times by men he met along the way, McCandless begins his travels through the Alaskan brush. He finds the trails of an abandoned bus and follows it. After falling through some ice, he makes to the bus where he decides to use it for shelter. A few days go by and he figures out how to salvage and hunt for food. Eventually, he kills a moose but fails in attempting to preserve the meat. McCandless decides he wants to cross the river, but it turns out it is chest high, so he returns back to the bus.

Analysis: McCandless is actually kind of a beast. This man was able to hunt and forage food to survive for a while. I think that his failure in preserving the meat is a big contribution to how he might die later on but we will see.

#Moose #PETA #cold

Summary: Krakauer is now at the bus where McCandless once was. He looks around and finds many of McCandless's tools and items he most likely used while being out in the wild. Using a map, Krakauer finds that McCandless would have been able to find multiple shelters, and a trail that would have led him to be able to cross further down the river. He determines that a combination of his hubris and lack of preparation led to his demise. A simple map could have prevented a whole lot of pain for poor Chris McCandless. Krakauer checks inside the bus and finds more of Chris's belongings. Afterwards, he cooks some food on the same grill Chris used and falls asleep.

Analysis: This chapter goes over what the aftermath looked like and gives insight on what could have led to his ultimate death(Chris's). A lot of the reason why McCandless passed was due to lack of preparation. If the man only had a map, he could have maybe still lived to tell the tale. Or possibly he did this deliberately based on his beliefs against modern civilizations and governments and whatnot.

#map #river #prep

Summary: Back in McCandless's point of view, we see him return back to the bus. He decided that crossing the river was not a good idea, and that it would be better if he waited it out. While waiting, McCandless looks into his readings on which foods were safe to eat. Seeds he had harvested included wild potato seeds and poisonous pea seeds. many people suspect that possibly McCandless could have eaten the poisonous peas by mistake, but Krakauer debunks this. He instead realizes that he could have eaten a moldy potato and gotten sick from it. This is determined from his journal documentations and symptoms. The final readings of McCandless were from a ripped page from a book with writing that states he had a good life and that this is his farewell. A picture is then used to show his last moments.

Analysis: So Krakauer determines that he died due to lack of preparation and starvation. Chris lived his final days in a terrible position. I personally would hope to never feel what he felt on his last days dying a slow and painful death. This story could be used to give a lesson on the importance of being prepared when going into the wild.

#Starving #RIP #Life

Summary: Billie and Walter visit the temporary home that their son once used to live in in the wild. The Narrator transports them via helicopter and on arrival, they begin the inspection. Billie checks inside the bus where McCandless rested and housed himself. Many of Chris's items and tools were still inside. It was almost eerie in a way how everything was abandoned after his death. After examination, Billie and Walter admire and realize how much Chris could have liked it there. They get back into the helicopter once they arrived, and watch the bus get smaller and smaller as they fly away.

Analysis: Overall, I believe that this left a satisfying ending for the family in which they got to see and understand where their son died. Another slick detail that was possibly used to portray something was the bus getting smaller in the distance as they got further away. This could reference how as time goes on, people will move on, and the memory of Chris will sadly one day dissipate into the abyss of forgotten memories.

#liveon #memoir #bus

Summary: After 23 ongoing years, Krakauer had been circling back to McCandless's case in order to solve the mystery of what really killed him and how. An author that he is close to lets him know about some research that was done on prisoners of the Nazi camps in WW2. This gives enough evidence to see that the potato seeds put a poisonous coating over themselves in the seasonal change as a defense mechanism. McCandless ate them, got sick, and died. Krakauer believes that if he had not eaten the seeds, he would have survived.

Analysis: In my own beliefs, I thought that McCandless definitely had a good chance of survival. Turns out that it was poisonous seeds that ended his life and adventure. His courage will benefit explorers just like him.

#courage #Letsgo #end

In the future, I plan achieve my ultimate goal of owning a warehouse where I can work on and learn more about cars. This is because I see myself building and testing cars with my friends or family members. To get there, I will need to find a profession in a similar field so like somewhere in automotive engineering. This will provide experience and funds for my future where I hope to be stable and healthy. Being stable will always be first of course, but reaching that next level of owning my own cars with each of their own uses is my ultimate goal.

#passion #drift #engineering

Chris McCandless Reflection

Good: From the beginning of the book, Chris McCandless seemed a bit like a complicated man. The kind of man that made me want to get to know more. He went off to have this crazy adventure, but it made me question why. Later throughout the book We learn more about the kind of person he was. There were any moments where I did not agree or liked how he continued throughout his journey. He did act scummy in some situations. For example whenever he'd meet and form a genuine relationship with someone, he'd just ditch them after a while. Or when he left that old man who wanted to adopt him without hesitation. He could have at least been a bit nicer about it, but instead he kept his mind on the bigger picture, which leads me to my next point. While he did act scummy at times, he was always determined to reach his ultimate goal. He was a worker, a fighter, maybe not the most sensible fighter but he did what was necessary to reach his goal his way. He wasn't always just a terrible person either. He was usually perceived as a charismatic young man who was genuine at heart. He was loved by many, for example the people in Carthage. I respect a man who works hard for his ultimate goal. And who's to say that he wouldn't have returned to his old friends if had he lived through the Alaskan wilderness. He was a good man.

#Wildride #Fighter #goals
