Many U.S. citizens face challenges in fulfilling their legal obligations and civic responsibilities, such as voting, serving on a jury, or staying informed about current issues. Barriers like limited access to quality education, voter suppression, distrust in government, finncial constraints or a lack of time can discourage participation. For example, long work hours or lack of transportation may prevent someone from voting or attending jury duty. Additionally, language barriers and misinformation can make it difficult for people to understand how to engage with the system. To promote greater civic participation, these challenges can be addressed through reforms such as expanding access to voting, improving civic education in schools, providing support for working citizens, and making government processes more transparent and accessible. By removing these barriers, more people can take an active role in strengthening democracy.

U.S. citizens must fulfill their legal obligations and responsibilities, in order to be a citizen in the United States. Some examples of these legal obligations are, paying taxes, jury duty. By understanding the difference between responsibilities and obligations is very important, for example some responsibilities are staying informed on local elections, voting, being apart of the common good, etc. Some challenges that citizens for obligations are for example, paying taxes. This can be a finical burden for some, as paying taxes can be overwhelming and hard to fulfill for some. Also for jury duty, this might be hard for some as some people working do not get paid time off, making jury duty hard to get to, making it hard to get time off, and have loss of wage due to being forced at jury duty. This challenge can be addressed by mandating all work too pay for time off, if a person is called for jury duty. These challenges for some U.S. citizens have been addressed throughout history, and are still ongoing. Specifically taxes, for lower income people.

Some challenges that US citizens are facing while trying to fulfill their legal obligations and responsibilities include lack of education, confusing processes, distrust of the government, and even misinformation. US citizens sometimes don't understand government processes very well because they have not been properly taught and the processes are confusing and frustrating for most. Many people currently have lost trust in the government which does not influence them to help the government. A lot of misinformation has been spread around which can also cause a lack of understanding and want to help the government. Challenges like these can be addressed by creating government education programs in order to help citizens understand government processes. Misinformation can be avoided by citizens if they check the reliability of their source. Having education processes and better tactics for citizens to use to obtain information about the government will help not only our citizens with government processes but also our government in general.

US citizens face many challenges when trying to fulfil their legal obligations and responsibilities. These obligations and responsibilites include obeying laws, paying taxes, serving on a jury duty, and many more. One of the biggest challenges when it comes to fullflling these is the lack of awareness and education revolving around how our government works. This could lead people to feel disconnected and unsure how to get involved. There are countless other issues such as not getting paid time off for jury duty or having a language barrier or disability which can make it a lot harder to participate. To promote greater civic participation, schools and communitys can offer better civic education and make voting and jury duty more accessible. These changes will not only ensure that everyone's voices and opinions are being heard and respected, but also helps to build our democracy and better our country in the process.

Legal obligations and responsibilities can bring challenges to US citizens. US citizens have both obligations and responsibilities. For example after you graduate you MUST apply for selective service. This makes it so that whenever there is a major war and there are not enough troops, the government can draft you into the war. US citizens are also required to serve jury duty, pay taxes, and obey laws. Yet we do have responsibilities. The difference between obligations and responsibilities is that obligations are things you MUST do while responsibilities are things that you really SHOULD do. Some responsibilities can be voting, or volunteering. These are things you should do but are not necessarily required to do. Yet there are challenges to complete both obligations and responsibilities. Some my not have enough education to understand a court case, while others may not be able to sign up for selective service because of disabilities. Others simply lack the materials or knowledge to vote. They may be too sick, not have enough education, to poor to afford to miss work, or not in the right mental state to complete there obligations. In order for people to be able to correctly fulfill their obligations and responsibilities, they must be given the right amount of knowledge in order to complete their civic duties. They should be able to get cheap transportation to a voting site, or a court house. This can help those who cannot afford a car, to reach the places they need to in order to fulfill there civic responsibilities. This is as much as the governments job as it is ours.

One significant challenge faced by citizens, notably women, that bars them from properly fulfilling their legal obligations and responsibilities is gender discrimination. Politics has historically been known as a male-dominated field. Therefore, when women participate in it, they may face judgment for attempting to participate more actively in the government. For example, in the early 1900s, the notion of "Republican motherhood" was emerging and gaining great traction. Republican motherhood was the idea that women would participate in the government passively. By teaching their children democratic principles in the home, they would fulfill their obligations as citizens. However, during the same period, women were still fighting for the right to vote. Many felt that women should not have such an active role in government, such as voting, but instead should only participate passively as teachers. Though times are changing and this stereotype is receding, breaking the social norm is still hard. Women are still seen as inferior when it comes to being leaders. People believe that women are too sentimental to serve on juries, and too emotional to be in office. We still have yet to have a female president, and women make up less than 30% of the US Congress currently. Though voter turnout between men and women is relatively equal, fulfilling other civic responsibilities, such as serving on a jury or running for office, can be difficult for women due to stereotypes. Until we can expel prejudice once and for all, it will always be an extra hoop women must jump through before participating in government.

U.S. citizens may face several challenges in fulfilling their legal obligations and responsibilities like voting or serving on juries. Staying informed about laws helps your responsibilities become easier since you can create educated decisions. Barriers such as the lack of access to voting locations, confusing legal processes, or limited civic education can discourage participation. Additionally, work and family responsibilities making it hard for people to engage in civic duties. To address these challenges, the government and communities can improve the civic education and expand the access to voting through mail-in ballots or extended hours. These steps can help promote greater civic involvement and strengthen democracy.

-Billie Leet
