These are most likely for the purpose of making it easier to understand for lower level readers, as it is a hard book to understand. For one, he hid books from captain Beatty, which in the end did not work in his favor. He also hid how he really felt about burning books, at first even from himself. He didn't let himself think about whether he was really happy until Clarisse made him realize how unhappy he really was. After this, he hid things from everyone; his wife, Beatty, the other firemen. The only person he would talk to for a while was Faber. Eventually all of this turned back and ruined everything for him.
