An example is "Back when I was little, I used to wonder why there weren't lines of people at those bins"(Lynda Hunt p. 36). As you can tell when Carly was young she had to take clothes but now Mrs Murphy buys her clothes.

A theme in the book Mr. Bixby's Last Day is care for others even if it is difficult. I think this because they Topher is willing to buy a bottle of wine for Ms. Bixby even though he knows that he could get into serious trouble (Anderson p.140). This shows that he will care for Ms. Bixby even though he knows it will be difficult.

The theme that fits this book is Treat Others The Way You Want To Be Treated. A place in the book where this applies is when Chad beats up Marshall, but when Marshall fights back Chad is really mad(Sachar pg.32-33). This shows that when Marshall fought back Chad got mad that Marshall fought back at him. This proves that you should treat others the way you want to be treated.

I think that the theme of this story is don't judge a book by its cover. An example of this is when the Josef and other Jewish people are touring the underneath of a ship and the nazis are yelling at them for being there, even though they have permission(Gratz p.97). This shows the theme because they are being judged just for being Jewish.

The book says " Isabel dove in after Senor Castillo." (Gratz p.120). This shows that how she worked hard to resist the waves and to pick up Senor Castillo and that it payed off when she saved his life.

The theme I chose for Refugee was hard work pays off, this is why I chose that. First, it explains that she really wanted to save Senor Castillo, so she jumped off the boat to save him even though there were very big waves (Gratz p. 136-137). I think this applies to the theme because she had to do all of this work to stay above the water even while her foot was caught on a rock and she was held underwater. By doing all this work to save him, it proved that she was happy and it paid off to have him here and alive.

A theme in one of Mahmoud's chapters is that hard work pays off. One way he showed this was when he walked up to a random guy in a car and asked him for help with finding a place to stay for the night (Gratz p. 126). This shows great bravery and desperation on Mahmoud's part, which could have been the reason why the driver was so nice.

On theme in the book, One For the Murphys is negative interactions can lead to positive impacts. An example of this is when Mrs. Murphy & her family adopt Carley from an abusive & toxic household (p.g. 3 Hunt). Another time this is shown is when Mrs. Murphy takes Carley shopping. Carley had stolen all of the clothes she ever owned so this was very exciting and fun for her (p.g. 36 Hunt). Therefore, negative interactions can lead to positive impacts and One For the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt helps prove that.

(Anderson p. 97). This was difficult because they did not have enough money for the cake but they knew that it would not be enough just to get a few slices.

I think the theme of Josef's story in the book Refugee is to not judge a book by its cover. I think this because the Jews in Germany were second class citizens and treated badly for no good reason. Many of them were killed in concentration camps just because of their religion. "Once, I saw another man shot dead with a rifle," his father whispered." he was standing right next to me, and I could not make a sound, or I would be next." (Gratz p.g 132). This shows that Josef and the rest of the Jews were treated badly and that the Germans judged them for their religion.

The theme of Ms.Bixby's Last Day is "Think about others before you". Brand, Steve, and Topher all cared for Ms.Bixby, so they got a cheesecake for her. They were all surprised because of how much money it was. Steve and Topher didn't have enough money because they didn't expect it to be so expensive, but Brand decided to use all of his money and buy the cake. " Brand produces a 20 dollar bill and lays it on the counter..." (Anderson pg.84). I think this connects to the theme because Brand spent a lot of his money to make Ms.Bixby happy. Therefore they put Ms. Bixby in front of themselves just to make her happy.

A big theme in the book Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar, is to trust your gut instinct. Tamaya has learned from her mistakes that she should always trust your gut instinct. When Marshall said that they should go through the woods, Tamaya did not think that was a good idea, but she just went and ignored her gut. (Sachar p.22-23). If she would have listened to her gut then she wouldn't have made those bad choices, and she wouldn't have a big rash on her arm.

The main theme in the book Fuzzy Mud by Louis Sachar is to treat others the way you want to be treated. I think this is because when Chad bullies Marshall and Tamaya they don't let it happen and fight back. An example is when Tamaya "She reached into the fuzzy mud and grabbed a handful of thick gooey muck. She ran at Chad, and as he turned toward her, she shoved it into his face" (pg 33 Sachar) This proves that they will treat Chad the same way Chad treats them.
