This is quite an interesting thought, is the ability to think in and of itself intelgent? If we take a “dumb” person and compare them to a leaf are they “smarter??” Or is the leaf in its own right also smart? Do u have to be able to communicate and prove intelligence? But how do u prove it? Threw a series of tests? But everything acts differently when its being observed so how do we know if a test is a true measure of potential. Is having the potential to do great things intelligence? Google defines intalagence as “the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.” But being /able/ to is not the same as actually /getting/ the knowledge and applying it uk? So like if just having the potential to learn new things and new skills, is intelligence thennnnnnnnn??? But we know intuitively that theres more to that, AnWAYS I’ll just go round and round in circles as i don’t have an answer

I think the most basic definition of intelligence is the ability to receive and interpret data for use in the future. Intelligence comes from the ability to take in information which can then be applied to knowledge and skills later on. There are many different forms of intelligence including but not limited to abstract, logic, creative, critical thinking and problem solving, which all have their unique applications, values and importance. Therefore it is possible for someone (or something) to be intelligent in one way but not another or to have different degrees of intelligence across the different areas.

What it means to be intelligent is a complex question with many areas of potential research and consideration to be accounted for. The term is illusive and a specific practical definition may be possible to define while a broad understanding of the term may prove illusive. Certainly there are areas broadly deemed to be intelligence, memory for example, that can be performed with greater accuracy by a computer than a human. This is also not to suggest that the computer is sentient or self aware which is often a key element of discussion in Artificial Intelligence

When I think of intelligence, the first thing that springs to mind is how little children and babies always start out not knowing how to do anything - like walking speaking a language, and putting food in their mouths. Over time though, they learn how to do all of these by trying it themselves and watching and learning from others. I think intelligence functions on a very similar foundation to this. I don't see it as an abstract idea or concept, I see it more as a process. It involves constantly receiving information from different sources, and doing something significant with it. In the case of a child learning how to walk: when they trip because they stepped on a toy, they know for next time that they need to avoid the toy. That is intelligence.

To answer this I dug down to the core of which beings are intelligent. Obviously I am intelligent. Obviously the fauna is intelligent. I'd argue trees are intelligent as they interact and change their environment. Okay, so if you impact and change the environment you are intelligent. But that doesn't work. The waves and the wind arn't intelligent and they are the processes resbonsible for errosion. Maybe intelligence is the choice, or a reaction, which alters the environment. Are bacteria intelligent then? At a macro level along the course of the higher human intellect, Yuval Noah Harari in his book "Sapiens" provides a fascinating idea that humans advance intellect comes from our ability to not only communicate nouns, but our ability to predict, and think in histories and futures.

Intelligence is gaining, storing, and using knowledge. This comes from problem solving. Every intelligent thing that wants to survive needs to be able to problem solve.
For example if we break to down: An animal that is hungry and needs to find food. The problem is the animal is hungry, if the animal doesn't get food it will starve. It test different potential foods through taste, sight, and smell and determines what it is able to eat. The problem is solve. The animal then knows that it's going to get hungry again. That is a new problem. The animal solves this problem by locating more of the food it consumed, by finding an area that has a high supply of the food and making a habitat there.
it uses the knowledge of the first time it got hungry to recognize it would get hungry again and the problem of finding food won't arise again, so it can focus on other problem to it's survival like shelter or reproduction.
This is however very basic intelligence, that all life forms have, humans have a more complex intelligence. This is because we have the ability to store more knowledge, and so do other animals like dolphins. However focusing on humans. Our intelligence extends to more effective communication, which allowed humans to pass on knowledge so the young don't have to start from scratch. Which lead to colonies and culture and buildings for a better habitat. Eventually expanding out to the world we know today.
Still today we gain intelligence through adapting and solving the latest problem that have arrived, like diseases and climate, all so human can survive.

Intelliegence means the accumulation and recollection of semantic knowledge of the world around you. This may include but not limited to, information about the immediate person near you, or the community, location, state that you may reside in, or information about a certain topic or subject that can be used to teach or be used in casual or non-casual conversation. However, the recollection of such information that is learnt, and being able to use this information where it may be presumed, is needed, is the display of intelligence. Although this does draw lines between intelligence and memory, intelligence may differ as it would center around semantic knowledge, rather than personal details, as semantic knowledge and the use / daily application of it, can represent some sort of intelliegence.
The different functions of an intelligent entity, includes being able to learn, process, and create actions based on prior stored information. This ability to display these 3 actions will allow an intelligent entity to create actions, learn from their mistakes and store this information for future use, so that they can perform better next time (utilising stored information).
Yet, judging on whether an entity is intelligent may differ on who is judging the entity, as the term of intelligence may differ slightly from person to person, but as a basis, an intelligent entity should be able to (reiterating what was said above) create actions, learn external information, and process/store this information for future use.

Intelligence is the ability to learn based on experiences. Using those experiences, to perform actions and gain new experiences and the cycle continues. A key part about intelligence is that it can be trained. An intelligent entity learns from a set of experiences and can be trained based on those experiences to perform actions/tasks.

My definition is of intelligence not dissimilar to my definition of sentience, in the sense that to be intelligent, you must possess the capability of experiencing and/or understanding emotion. I believe this idea is heavily explored in the sci-fi fiction book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' by Phillip K. Dick and I found the ideas explored in this story very interesting for this reason.

The ability to make decisions is also a factor in measuring intelligence, using critical thinking to find the best possible way to go about what you are trying to achieve.
