Canadian First Nations and Chinese immigrants have shared a dark history of marginalization, discrimination, systemic injustice, and exploitation by the hand of the Canadian government. The Parliament’s intention was utmost legal control; the Chinese Immigration Act and Head Tax formed legal barriers that paralleled the imposition of the Indian Act. Both acts forced assimilation, exploitation and oppression which prayed upon both innocent nations. Despite differences in cultural backgrounds and experiences, Chinese immigrants and Canadian First Nations share a common struggle: freedom and autonomy against the Canadian government. However, this outrageous treatment did not stop these two communities from forming deep roots with one another. Allied not only by hardship they also shared an appreciation for the land and culture; finding safety within their fellow “man.” These communities have fought for recognition, justice, and the preservation of their cultural heritage over decades while the Canadian government has been hesitant in its accountability.
