Slaves on plantations became very close to one another. Since families were often separated by slavery their fellow slave neighbors on other plantations were considered family. Children born into slavery sometimes stayed with their mother until they became of age. After they were grown, they either stayed on the plantation or were sold to another owner, leaving their families. A safe place for the slaves became their cabins. "The slave cabins provided one of the few places where slaves could be more or less free from constant supervision from slave owners." (Pre-Civil War African-American Slavery). Because of this freedom, the slaves created a social culture away from their masters.

During Civil War

During the Civil War, many slave owners and slaves had interracial children. Many female slaves were forced to have said relations , or face beatings. Occasionally, the masters would free the children of these affairs out of paternal compassion. When the wives of the slave owners discovered the affairs, they took their anger out on the mistresses. Instead of taking anger out on the men. One example of these affairs was between Thomas Jefferson and slave, Sally Hemings. A newspaper of that time reported "Jefferson had for many years "kept, as his concubine, one of his own slaves." "Her name is Sally," Callender continued, adding that Jefferson had "several children" by her." (Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings.)

Following the civil war many slave families reached out in a attempt to reunite with their loved ones. It was rare to find a lost relative most times, as they didn't know their identity because they were born into slavery. Slaves also had no way of knowing their families whereabouts after being separated years before. Family, church, and school became the centers of black life after slavery. "Black churches became centerpieces of African-American culture and community, not only as places of personal spiritual renewal and communal worship. But also as centers for learning, socializing, and political organization." (Life After Slavery for African Americans.)
