3. city has launched an ambitious $1.2-billion campaign to build 10,000 units of housing for the homeless by 2026 

4. a quarter-cent tax proposal to provide $355 million a year for homeless services will be on the March ballot in Los Angeles County 

5. city cut unsheltered homelessness 43% and veteran homelessness overall 41% in a year
6. Homeless veterans have high rates of chronic illness, limited primary care use, and an age-adjusted mortality that is nearly three times higher than their housed counterparts.

6. city’s $5-million program to assist homeless veterans has helped only 268 get off the streets over 18 months 

7. 4,800 living on streets and riverbeds countywide — including 2,700 in the city of Los Angeles

In order to help alleviate the crisis, the report recommended, among other things:

• Considering using the General Hospital building north of downtown, or other vacant structures, to house homeless veterans and their families.

• Expanding county benefits for homeless veterans from one to two years.

• Setting up a county mobile outreach service for veterans at the missions. 

• Giving the missions more county homeless funds.

• Establishing county storage facilities for homeless veterans.

• Speeding up the procurement and contracting process.

Jesus doesn’t shy away from helping those in need. This example shows that Jesus wants to teach people about God and help those who are suffering, no matter how they have sinned in the past. As homeless Veterans have high rates of chronic illness, Jesus would want us to help those who so generously helped us.
