How do we engage students to respond in real time (other than "mandating") during lessons and during informal "chat" sessions? Is there a way to "record" responses?

One suggestion is to provide students with context and discussion questions for the live session in advance so that students can practice and prepare. This may reduce anxiety in sessions and allow students (and families) to have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. You might also consider setting an expectation that students participate ____ times in a session - and that can either be out loud or in the chat - and that can count as a participation grade.

Between recording the session in Google Meet and copying and pasting the dialogue in the chat, you can have a record of student participation.
