•He developed theories based around the notion of the SIGN,

•IMPORTANT and RELEVANT to theories of photography

•What he called: the SIGN, the REFERENT and the INTERPRETANT
•Pierce’s sign theory, or semiotics, is an account of signification, representation, reference and meaning.
•‘I define a sign as anything which is so determined by something else, called its Object (or referent), and so determines an effect upon a person, which effect I call its interpretant’ (Pierce, 2003, p.345)
•SIGNS as SIGNIFIERS, for example, smoke or a red light

•REFERENT or OBJECT, for example the actual fire- an actual thing in the real word 

•INTERPRETANT, the understanding we have of the sign/ object relation- i.e. if we see smoke, we might sound the alarm or run away or scream- it provokes an effect or reaction in us

•MEANING is, according to PIERCE, only found through the interpretant- it is the interpretation that generates in sign users
•Pierce thought that representations generate further interpretants in one of three ways:

•1. LIKENESS or RESEMBLANCE to the object à ICONS

•2. objects that consist in a correspondence IN FACT as INDICES (INDEX)

•3. signs whose relations to their objects is an imputed characterà SYMBOLS
