Coxiella burnetii is an obligated intracellular pathogenic parasite that can infect a human with very few organisms.
Since this disease is associated with contact from infected livestock feces, urine, milk and reproductive fluids the people most at risk ate farmers, veterinarians and meat plant factory workers.
The incubation period is 9-40 days and half of the time people don't have any symptoms. However the sever cases show flu like symptoms, fever, loss of appetite, muscle and joint pain, chills, GI problems and upper respiratory problems. Few develop chronic Q fever that results in infection in 1 or more heart valves.
Treatments for acute Q fever is just letting the pathogen run its course. For chronic Q fever months of combination antibiotics such as doxycycline and hydrochloroquine are required.
The only known prevention for this disease is avoiding contact with infected animals, especially during birth andnot consuming unpasteurized milk.
