My family came from Tuscany – Italy. They were looking for better opportunities in Brazil, so they came here hoping to have a better life.

The sisters

Derna, came to Belo Horizonte - Brazil with her parents and older sister, my great-grandmother, Nara, but the family was unable to raise two daughters, so they left Nara in Brazil and returned to Italy with Derna.

The reunion

Nara grew up alone in Brazil, until she met Geraldo, her future husband. When they got married, Geraldo took Nara to Italy to meet her sister, after twenty years of separation.

The restaurant

Geraldo took Derna to Brazil and she opened the first Italian restaurant in Belo Horizonte, Dona Derna Restaurant. The place is still open nowadays.

Nara and Geraldo had three children, who were born in Belo Horizonte, Lilian, Juca and my grandmother Myrian. They all had a comfortable life in Brazil, all their children studied and got married.

Myrian’s family

Myrian married Obertal, they lived happily together and had three daughters; Andrea, Luciana and my mother, Mirian, who has the same name as her mother because my grandfather wanted to honor his wife, as he knew she would be their last daughter.

My father and mother grew up at Belo Horizonte and both studied electrical engineering at UFMG, where she met my father, they started dating, in 1992 they got married and five years later they moved to São Paulo due to my mother's work.

My brother

In 2002, my mother had her first child, Gustavo. Gustavo grew up in São Paulo and also studied at Porto Seguro. Now he’s living in Belo Horizonte with my grandparents and studying engineering at UFMG, like my parents and my grandparents.

Cícero and Laura Ferreira

Cícero Ferreira, my great-great-grandfather, was born in Brazil and was a doctor. He was part of the commission that built Belo Horizonte and was the founder of the medical school of Minas Gerais. He married Laura Ferreira and had at least ten children, one of them is my great-grandfather, Ary Ferreira.

Ary and Maria Alice Ferreira

Ary Ferreira, my great-grandfather, studied and graduated in medicine in Germany. Back in Brazil, he founded the Santa Clara hospital and, for his contributions to the city, he had the honor of having a street in Belo Horizonte named after him, Rua Doutor Ary Ferreira. He married Maria Alice Ferreira, known as “Sinha”, because she had a babysitter who was the daughter of slaves who benefited from the “Lei do Ventre Livre”, and she always called her “Sinhazinha”.

Aristides Ferreira and Olga Mascarenhas

Aristides Ferreira is my great-great-grandfather, he was a mining engineer and there is also a street named after him in Belo Horizonte. He married Olga Mascarenhas and had at least 10 children, including my great-grandmother, Sinha.
