Many have heard the saying, "Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492", however, this saying turned into a narrative in which Christopher Columbus was lauded a hero for "discovering" America. The natives that inhabited the lands were labeled as savages and enslaved. This perspective has drastically changed as historians have studied the true events of that time period and what was once a heroic view point has morphed into a tale of violence, slavery and death. In this Module, students will read excerpt analysis from historian, Howard Zinn, that presents Christopher Columbus' reaction when he first encountered the natives of the Arawak nation and the actions that Columbus took to ensure his legacy was one of heroism and leadership. After reading Columbus's perspective of the native Arawaks, students will then have an opportunity to analyze historian Horace Miner's research on cultural differences and perspective. Students will read excerpts of Miner's research titled The Body Rituals of the Nacirema. As students read Miner's excerpts, they will read into the perspective and difference of culture as details of a North American culture are outlined.
