In the photo above we are able to see the statue of one of the most significant politicians in Greek history, Pericles. The image has been taken during a decontamination, something which obviously was not by mistake. This great politician, who played a leading role in the development of democracy, became diseased by an ancient pandemic and unfortunately died with the rest of his family. That pandemic, such as the modern corona virus, had caused death to more than half the population of Athens during the Peloponnesian war, having extremely devasting consequences for the city. Without a doubt the most important of them was the death we mentioned before. The ancient Athenian virus, compared to the current situation, presents a lot in common with the contemporary virus. Certainly, the most noticeable is the high numbers of deaths every day, which under no circumstances can be ignored. Having taken into consideration all of that, we can say that the statue of Pericles is experiencing the same situation he experienced years before by himself. As a result, the person we see in the photograph is disinfecting that politician so he will not be able to be infected by a pandemic for second time.

Pericles was the leader of Athens during the 5th century and the first two years of the Peloponnesian war. The century is known as the golden century of Pericles because of his contribution to Greek civilization.

This picture portrays an employee of a disinfection company, disinfecting the statue of the greatest politician of Ancient Athens, Pericles in times of a pandemic (the well-known Covid19). His statue is made out of white marble, and the politician is holding a parchment on his hand while his name is carved on the statue’s base. Pericles was the greatest and most well-known politician that Athens has ever had, since while he was in power, the economy, architecture (Acropolis buildings-Parthenon etc) and the arts developed which contributed to the Democracy’s prosperity. The century in which he lived and acted is known as “The golden age of Pericles” because he offered so many things to his city and was an example of a politician leader. Unfortunately, he died in 430BC due to the plague that spread all around Athens, which also costed a thousand Athenian lives. This event was determing for the city’s future, since after that, a chaos was spread in Athens caused by the political disagreements between the Democrats and Aristocrats (the 2 opposite Parties). Today, after over 2.500 years watching Pericles’ statue being disinfected, makes you think how vulnerable the humanity is, to unknown pandemic viruses that have lethal consequences. Nowadays, Pericles is a witness of a second pandemic to his beloved city. At least now, we know the needed measures to take in order to protect ourselves as possible from this invisible enemy until the vaccine is available.

The most particular element of this picture is the statue of Pericles that is being disinfected by a state emploee whose job is to disinfect the whole square. This could be considered a kind of irony as according to our history, Pericles had also been living during a plague that dominated in ancient Athens. This plague was the cause of Pericle's death and this fact is remarkable. Well, this picture functions as a combination of these two eras that caused such difficulties in people's way of living. Then and now. Same problem, different times.

Pericles was a Greek politician who ruled during the 5th century BC, also known as the “Golden Age of Athens”. Being one of the most influential leaders of all times, Pericles transformed his city into the major intellectual and political centre of the ancient world. His greatest legacy is the “Periclean Building Program” that included the construction of iconic statues, temples and buildings like the Acropolis that still defines the skyline of Athens. However, Pericles is best remembered for his contribution to the development and the expansion of Athenian Democracy and the freedom of speech, which both are still the foundation of the modern western world. This is why this era is also referred to as the “Golden Age of Pericles”. During the civil war between Athens and Sparta also known as the Peloponnesian War, ancient Athens was struck by a deadly plague that killed one third of its population. The brilliant Athenian statesman was among the victims of that epidemic. His promising career came to a bitter end due to his sudden death, sinking Athens into cultural and political darkness.

The picture shows a statue of Pericles which adorns the city of Athens, being one of its most precious jewels. What is remarkable about this picture is that it shows Pericles being exposed to a deadly epidemic for a second time. However this time, it’s not the plague but the coronavirus. A disinfection services employee is sanitizing the statue of Pericles that has survived through the centuries, reminding us that none of us is invulnerable from this virus.

The statue is a statue of Pericles . Pericles was a prominent and influential Greek statesman, orator and general of Athens during its golden age, specifically the time between the Persian and the Peloponnesian Wars. The period during which he led Athens, roughly from 461 to 429 BC, is sometimes known as the "Age of Pericles".
During 429 BC when the plague infected many people , two sons same as him were infected by the plague and eventually died.
This picture can be interpreted in my ways. In my opinion this picture is kind of funny but also shows some things that we are dealing with right now and what we should or at least try to do .With nowadays situation , meaning the coronavirus pandemic and the strict measurements that have been implemented we can compare the photo with our everyday lives. For example , the man is keeping his distance from the statue while cleaning it ,exactly as we do today. Same with the use of masks , we use them and avoid physical contact to reduce the chances of spreading the virus. Also another thing is that he is cleaning the statue ,something we also do a lot nowadays. We wash almost everything with rubbing alcohol to kill microbes and decrease infection rates.

This depiction pictures the statue of Pericles , who is one of the greatest ancient Greek politician, orator and general during the 5th century B.C
The notable feature of this picture is the figure of Pericles who is subjected to a decontamination process by a specially dressed person. This photo is taken in our era, in which the globe deals with a serious virus, coronavirus and so as Pericles did in his era. Therefore, we do realize the irony of this picture because this man had been in a similar situation, when he was alive in the past and the cause of his death was a virus (a pandemic disease). So, the conclusion is that might history is repeated with the main personality being Pericles who relive the experience of a pandemic disease.

This picture is by itself a very strong and sentimental picture as in it we can clearly see the statue of a great ancient politician in Athens who didn’t hesitate to make the Athens of that time great. The name of that person was PERIKLIS. Periklis was a politician , military, erdist and a speaker. But unfortunately , like many other people in that time Periklis died from the plague of Athens in autumn in 429a.C. . This picture is special because it shows us that even if its just a statue people in Greece take care of it but it also is kind of ironic since he died in a pandemic and now it seems like he found himself in another one in 2020.

The personality who depicted in the image corresponds to the most brilliant and admirable politician of ancient Greece. Pericles. Pericles who managed to change the face of Athens both in its political course and in its spiritual and artistic course, giving the city of Athens the Gold of the Century. In particular, it became known as the Golden Age of Pericles. Pericles is estimated to have been born between 495 - 490 BC. He belonged to an aristocratic family and managed to get an excellent education from Anaxagoras, Zeno, Eleati and Damon.
The cultivation of his spirit gave him unlimited composure. His great charisma was none other than his eloquence and rhetorical skill. Many described him as strong but the real power of Pericles was not only physical but mainly spiritual. He was very active and politically active. Pericles soon became the next leader of the Democrats, winning the favor of most Athenians. It aimed to make Athens the cradle of democracy and culture and he succeed it even in those difficult times when the power of war prevailed.
The end of the Golden Age marks the beginning of the Peloponnesian War. Athens at the end of the 5th century BC is the superpower that can fortify Piraeus against enemy ships. On the contrary, the Spartans of Archidamus plundered the Attic land in the second year of the Peloponnesian War. In 430 BC and 429 BC a savage, deadly unprecedented plague broke out. The Pestilence of Athens was a catastrophic epidemic that first appeared in the main port of Athens, Piraeus. It became the cause of death not only of thousands of Athenians, but also of the most historic Republic in the world. In five years (430 - 426 BC), a quarter of the population of the city-state, which was then under siege by Sparta, lost their lives. The first symptom of the patients was a devastating fever, uncontrollable bleeding from the eyes, vomiting and continued bleeding, followed by rashes.
Thucydides states that if one wanted to escape death, he would cut off the part of the body where there was an obvious sign of symptoms, such as the extremities of the hands and feet, and some even took out their eyes. Still others, immediately after their treatment, suffered general amnesia and did not recognize themselves or their loved ones. Culture and economic prosperity declined significantly and the fate of Athens was decisively influenced. So and the course of the Greek cities.
The municipality revolted against Pericles, and he was forced to defend himself, with one last emotional speech. It is considered a great act of Pericles that shows his virtues, but also his frustration, in front of the ingratitude of his fellow citizens. Pericles was one of the thousands of citizens who succumbed to the epidemic. He let out his last breath in August 429 BC, marking the end of an entire era that gave Ancient Greece and later the Greeks the basic characteristics of democracy.
In the picture the most special part is the presence of a man / municipal worker who disinfects the statue of the glorious Pericles and the area around it. Therefore, through this image we realize that Pericles was a real leader, an honest and methodical politician who aimed to get the best out of his people without ever using his rhetorical ability to deceive but only to help and to serve the citizens of Athens. This personality will be unforgettable for many years. Honor and Glory to You, Our Pericles.

He was the leader who marked the era of the Athenian Plague and he himself was one of the thousand citizens who succumbed to the pandemic. This devastating pandemic caused huge mortality and was a cause of the death of thousands Athenians as well as the most historical Democracy of the world and unexpectedly and early led to the end of the Golden Age/century.
The civilization and economic blossom significantly declined and the fate of Athens was dramatically influenced, according Thoukidides Athens never again gained its forces at the standards of power which it possessed in the Golden Century, after the plague.
It worths mentioning that the worker who disinfects , perhaps has no idea of who is depicted on the statue which he disinfects. The funny element of this case is that Pericles has already acquired immunity. At the same time historical oddity is stressed. 2449 years after the Plague in Athens,Pericle's statue is considered suspicious and is treated as a possible suspect of the coronavirus!
In coherence and given the deaths because of the plague and the coronavirus the text from Thoukidides Epitaph comes to our mind.It looks more contemporary than ever,if we take into consideration the fact that the worker doesn’t know the identity of the statue.

He was the son of Jantipo, the creator of the Greeks defeating the Persians in the Battle of Micala, and Agaristé, the prestigious legislator Kleist (Clístenes)'s niece and a member of the noble family of alcmeónidas. He was once the chief strategist in Greece and was called the "Olympics" because of his silent voice and excellent speaking skills. He died in 429 AD. Because of the Athens plague (430 AD).
