It was a major success, selling over 118 million units combined with its successor, the Game Boy Color. The Game Boy is known for its pioneering use of game cartridges in a handheld console and its long battery life. 

The 1990s was a peak era for arcade games, experiencing a renaissance driven by the popularity of fighting games like Street Fighter II and the rise of 3D graphics with games like Virtua Fighter. While arcades initially thrived, they faced decline in the late 90s as console gaming technology advanced. 

The early 2000s marked a period of transition for arcade games, with the rise of home consoles leading to a decline in the arcade industry in the Western world. However, arcades in Japan, China, and South Korea continued to thrive, with some games like Dance Dance Revolution and those utilizing specialized equipment like motion simulation or virtual reality gaining popularity.
