Tow factors drive whether you find someone initially attractive: whether you perceive them as offering the kind of rewards you think you deserve in a romantic relationship (affection, emotional support, money, sex, etc.) and whether you think that the rewards they can offer you are superior to those you can get elsewhere (Kelley & Thibaut, 1978)." (Mccornack, 2013)
-To put it simply, we are attracted to people who can offer us rewards that we want and are greater than what we would have to give them.
-Pictured below is a balance beam that is depicting the social exchange theory. In the picture, the negatives or costs of the relationship are outweighing the positives or benefits. In this example, the relationship would more than likely be ended.

Smith, J.

" The idea that revealing the self to others involves peeling back or penetrating layers was first suffused by psychologists Irwin Altman and Dalmas Taylor (1973)...") "At the outermost, peripheral layers of your self are demographic characteristics such as birthplace, age, gender, and ethnicity... In the intermediate layers reside your attitudes and opinions about music, politics, food, entertainment, and other such matters... The central layers of your self- core characteristics such as self-awareness, self-concept, self-esteem, personal values, fears, and distinctive personality traits." (Mccornack, 2013 )
-Pictured below is an onion that is being metaphorically used to exemplify the social penetration theory. The first layer of the onion represents the peripheral layers, the second and third represent the intermediate layers, and the 4th, 5th, and 6th represent the central layers.

"People are especially motivated to adapt their language when they seek social approval, when they wish to establish relationships with others, and when they view others language usage as appropriate (Giles, Coupland, & Coupland, 1991). In contrast, people tend to accentuate differences
between their language and other when they wish to convey emotional distance and disassociate themselves from others."

"People with only moderate power are most likely to use controlling communication. because their power is limited, they can't always be sure they're going to get their way. hence they feel more of a need to wield power in noticeable ways." (Mccornack, 2013)
- This type of communication is mostly used with people such as team captains, partners that you would work with in groups, and middle management.
-In the video below Gary (team captain) approaches Julius and begins talking to him in a controlling manner and trying to exercise his power as a team captain. Gary begins telling Julius how he feels personally and what he wants Julius to do in order to fix whats going on.

Atkinson, D. (2010, October 01). Attitude Reflects Leadership.

"Personal beliefs about different types of personalities and the ways in which traits cluster together (Bruner & Taguiri, 1954). When we meet people for the first time, we use implicit personality theories to perceive just a little about an individuals personality and then presume a great deal more, making us feel that we know the person and helping to reduce uncertainty. At the same time, making presumptions about peoples personalities is risky." (Mccornack, 2013)
- In the video below, the gentleman that is talking to the lady begins explaining to her why he does and does not like to get in line behind certain people at the airport. Though he knows nothing more than what meets the eye he has already formed an assumption about the people he sees.

Up In The Air: Stereotyping about travelling by plane. (2013, November 23).
