Summary:
Canon Kelly had claimed that Catherine McAuley was trespassing the missional field of Mary Aikenhead’s Apostolate. Both women were busy helping the poor as to engage with insulting thoughts towards each other. Catherine had years of teaching experience when Mary Aikenhead's apostolate began teaching. On June 4, 1829, Canon Kelly delivered her first rant which had stated that Catherine was competing with a religious community. For Catherine, this was too absurd to entertain, and she resented her involvement. Earlier on September 10, 1829, Catherine had assured Father Francis that she would continue her original purpose which was to alleviate the suffering and teachings of the ignorant. Ladies would dedicate themselves to this service and when they no longer felt inclined, they would return to their normal life. Catherine disliked the idea of religious vows and disapproved of observances being misrepresented.

Summary:
Catherine McAuley did not entirely disapprove of religious life. Her main objective was that religious life at that time influenced the breadth of the apostolate that she intended. Nano Nagle’s goal was discarded after her death when the Presentation Sisters opted for an enclosure, and Catherine McAuley, approaching the greatest crisis of her life, was determined to find a practical way out of the dilemma she had accidentally encountered. In anticipating current ideas about the place of a religious community in the local church, Catherine became mistrusted. She fell victim to a persistent fear that overshadowed her work and yet she unconsciously led the group to the threshold of the sanctuary. The most soul-seeking motto was formed in which was asking the divine Lord to help and comfort them so that they could overcome all obstacles on their way. The Clarendon Street Carmelite Fathers were an important shaper of Catherine McAuley’s life and work. Manuscripts written unanimously testified that they were grateful to this order since they always received kindness, support and encouragement from them. Shortly after the inauguration of the chapel on Baggot Street, the Sacred Heart of Jesus was formed.

Summary:
By 1830, Catherine’s associates increased which led to conventual stability. Uniform dress was adopted, a common schedule was worked out for spiritual practice and daily life. The uniform dress was a rough gray cloak with a black silk hood and a muslin veil and during summer the cloak was replaced by a scarf. The schedule provided a time for prayer, mass, work and recreation. Another schedule was provided for private reading, private prayer and public rosary which focused more on the religious life. Anne O’Grady who spent a year at Wexford’s convent asked to still be called “Sister” and was granted her request. Catherine smiled at everything. Everyone who had to alleviate a need, suffering or difficulty came to her for help and she did her best to help. She was tireless in her efforts to revitalize the needs.

Summary: The Archbishop guaranteed that Catherine could still pursue her apostolate and that her institution will have its own status. She studied the rules of most of the congregations that were established in Dublin. Catherine chose the Rule of the Presentation Sisters that was founded by Nano Nagle in 1775. She feared that her absence might be damaging to the infant establishment, due to her age, so Dr. Murray sent her two religious of the order. It was decided that two person would be sent to serve as a novitiate at George's Hill if permission was obtained. Anna Maria Doyle, Elizabeth Harley and Catherine McAuley started their training in George's Hill on September 8, 1830. Mary Anne Delany was appointed as a temporary superior in Baggot Street by Catherine. Frances Ward was given control of the finances.

Summary: The novitiate period lasted from September 8, 1830 to December 12, 1831 and the fifteen months were a more difficult time or trial that had been expected. Catherine inspired and guided the people of the House of Mercy and her views were greatly accepted by them. She was punished and publicly corrected for trifling faults at George's Hill. Catherine was humiliated before her relations and had to read them from the Imitation of Christ. She went through other punishments for things like over-staying in the parlor by mere minutes and was not allowed to see the President of Carlow College. Catherine was ordered to kneel at the foot of the novitiate table with her arms extended in the form of a cross. Even though she was old and elderly, she had to do that for more than an hour with her arms still stretched and her body trembling and about to collapse. She was denied communication with Baggot Street and she worried about young helpers whom were sick and dying. Caroline Murphy died on June 1831 and Anne O'Grady was dying. Father O'Hanlon and Burke walked around the House at night, after ten, to make sure that the lights were out in order to prevent further misguided austeries.

Catherine McAuley had just permanently resided in Baggot Street in May 1828 when she started to receive backlash from the citizens around the area. Her arrival stirred disapproval among these people, painting her in a negative way. Those who failed to understand why she was doing the things she did criticized her immensely; though she had some supporters. Furthermore, she received the most backlash for sending letters to the catholic people of the community asking for donations for the upkeep of the House of Mercy. This was not a common practice, especially for a woman back in those days; but still, Catherine's faith and determination never wavered.

The letter sent to the Catholics of the neighborhood was written and approved by Reverend Matthew Kelly and Reverend Doctor Armstrong. It stated that hundreds of young girls who are in need of homes are housed there, where they would be taught valuable lessons in order to navigate this world along with God. By doing this, they would be protecting these females from the corruption of the outside world. Therefore, a donation was always welcomed in order for them to continue this practice. The letter received some positive outcomes, though negative feedback was bound to be experienced. Some anonymous writer demanded not to hear from Catherine ever again and asked to be left alone. While another one criticized Catherine for leading in such "manly" doings. Implying that it's not her place to be doing such things a man should've done. These harsh words did affect Catherine sometimes, but it never once caused her to regret her actions.

Elizabeth Harley were professed. At Catherine's own request, her community now addressed her as Mother Catherine as she wished. The title was not superseded by the more formal Reverend Mother until convents outside her native Dublin were established. Then Mother Catherine and her community, by Dr Murray's direction, patterned their lives on the chapter on Union and Charity. Mother Catherine could not have written anything more expressive of the perfection of charity which was her goals in life and always directed her Sisters

As the House of Mercy began to get increasingly known, more girls started to be housed there; some even extended their residency to months instead of weeks. Because of this trend the House of Mercy needed more donations to maintain these girls in acceptable conditions. Therefore, many fundraiser and bazaars were planned to happen. Catherine's bold moves stirred up controversy between the people, especially when she asked The Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria for contributions. The criticism she received was so immense that even Rev. Matthew Kelly of St. Andrews managed to be one of her biggest critic. Despite this, the Duchess and Princess donated a generous amount of things, which Catherine received with open arms. During this whole ordeal, she even managed to plan a charity sermon as the last source for financial gain. This sermon happened to be a big success, and was carried out annually after that.

Archbishop Murray had all of Catherine's support in giving the the National School Systems ealy applications to the new board. Personality, purpose, scholarship, specialization, preparation, progressiveness, motivation were the aims and methods of Catherine. She encouraged schools that kindness and patience is needed for a solid foundation and that the children should be rewarded as a way to let the children know that teachers are to be trusted like best friends. She also made her views on discipline heard by saying they should not be punished if they were given sufficient work.

Catherine McAuley encouraged the pension schools for having middle class because the poor schools could have their needs addressed. A letter was written to Sister M. Josephine Warde and was told that the peNsion schools in Cork were doing good and after this the Cork community got their own poor school. There was even AN ADULT EDUCATION CENTRE for the deaf and the mutes. THE SECRET OF HER SUCCESS LAY IN HER SPIRITUAL FORMATION, OPENESS TO NEW IDEAS, HER ABILITY TO ADAPT AND ASSIMILATE AND HER WILLINGNESS TO LEARN FROM OLDER MODELS AND SHARE THIS WITH OTHERS.

Summary: Catherine said that she was happy when a novice that was living under her obedience would continue living like that. She would tell people of her edification she received during during her time in the convent from the nuns, superiors and Mother Mary Francis Knowd. Catherine composed a poem after her reception as a novice in December 1830. The poem talks about pleasant reminiscences of her her days. Catherine was strong and persevered during her time at George's Hill. Sister. M. Elizabeth Harley's health was visibly deteriorating . Archbishop Murray proposed to Catherine and her companions vows that would bind them chastity, perpetual poverty and obedience AND SERVICE TO THE POOR in the congregation of the Sisters of Mercy. The Presentation Sisters agreed to this and on December 12, 1831 Sister M. Catherine McAuley, Sister M. Anne Doyle and Sister M. Elizabeth Harley were professed. Canonical status was also obtained for the congregation of Sisters of Mercy that day.

Excellent job on the summary, Nicole. Reflection needed to mention how you can identify with Catherine's bold moves to pull through the challenges she encountered in her quest to help others?

Good Summary but could have been better if you relay complete events. Reflection was general not making emphasis to specific incidents the foundress encountered!

Good summary and reflection, Noelia. The vows professed by the Sisters of Mercy were: poverty, chastity, obedience and service to the poor.
