When Veena’s family is forced to leave their home during the partition of India and Pakistan, they find themselves in an unfamiliar place without food, jobs, or a home. Veena decides that the best way she can help is by making food from home: roti. Even though the roti is different, she makes it with love and care; people appreciate her efforts. Eventually, her family finds a more permanent home, and Veena’s delicious roti come with them. The illustrations for the story are simple but show the deep emotions that are portrayed, from early fear to the comfort of familiar food and the joy and hope that comes with resilience. This story requires background context for those unfamiliar with partition and its upheaval and consequences. Though the picture book format may be a hard sell for them, this title is probably better suited to middle grade readers who will have some world history background knowledge for it to make sense.

Miguel Rosado wants nothing more than to see and draw the world... or, at least anywhere beyond the four walls of his family's bodega in Washington Heights. Too bad his mami and papi have him working long hours after school, hoping he'll appreciate the sacrifices they've made to keep the store afloat. For street-savvy and newly-adopted cat Lolo, that sounds just perfect if it means he's far, far away from the hungry, lonely nights he once spent in the freezing cold outdoors.

But when Miguel ditches his responsibilities and lies to his parents about joining art club, his dream of juggling it all comes crashing down. Lolo will have to decide if he's willing to be there for his new friend Miguel through anything-even venturing back into the frightful outdoors and busy New York City sidewalks. Can they trust each other enough to take on this adventure together?

Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and species!

Growing up in Cambodia, Malen knew that dangers from a long-ago war lay hidden underground. Buried explosives forced her and many others to live, farm, and play in fear. As she got older, Malen learned how to use a metal detector to find and safely dispose of these landmines.

Five thousand miles away, in Tanzania, Magawa was also learning how to find landmines. But he didn’t need a metal detector—he had his nose. Magawa was a rat, and his smelling superpower and light weight helped him safely sniff out dangerous explosives.

After completing his training, Magawa joined Malen in Cambodia, and together they cleared more than a hundred landmines from fields all across the country. A fascinating true story with a hopeful ending and rich back matter from Scott Riley, author of The Floating Field, with Sambat Meas, a Cambodian deminer, and Cambodian American illustrator Huy Voun Lee.

Gordon the Meanest Goose on Earth by Alex Latimer

There are plenty of mean geese in the world. Five of them meet monthly at the Meanest Goose Society. One bites fingers. One makes old ladies carry her shopping. But Gordon is the meanest goose of all.

He shouts at people. He presses the cross-the-road button repeatedly and never crosses the road. He even directs zoo visitors to the open tiger cage!

But when Anthony the Piglet gives him a beautiful flower, Gordon is unsettled. Why is he feeling like this? Perhaps instead of being mean, he could be brave. And saying sorry for being mean would be very brave indeed...

This is a very funny story. Alex Latimer’s genius illustrations add to the humour as well – never has a goose had such brilliant facial expressions. Or eyebrows.

The message of being nice instead of mean is delivered with thoughtfulness as well as humour, so it’s not sickly or didactic. Children should love poring over this book and enjoying the colourful pictures and the silliness.
