All of this  happened in full detail in chapter 15 and 16. I think this is a turning point because, before her parents adopted her she was an orphan. In the book she talks about losing her parents twice. One, being given up for adoption and then tragically losing  her new set of guardians in a horrific accident. In the book she says "Meaning has been drained from my life. I am a shadow. I no longer dream in colour. I don't count by 7's. Because in this new world i don't count". He shouldn't have felt hatred towards her since it wasn't her fault. If I were him I would've felt very sorry towards her and mourn with her of her parents. But I do understand how Quang-ha felt when his mother's (Pattie) attention was all on Willow during the period of the aftermath of the accident. As quoted on page 128 " The little girl was strange.Couldn't everyone see that?" and during a later part he quoted "He was not going to feel sorry for her because her parents died in a car crash". Mai doesn't exactly fit in to certain groups, my friend can relate to that. She is a very special individual that doesn't move with the crowd all the time. Another relatable thing they both have is caring for others although they may get in trouble. Mai thinks bravely for Willow and takes her to her house and says that she has known Willow for years, even though she's known her for weeks. I remember one time I spilled water in someone else's room,  my friend spilled water all  over herself on purpose  so that i wouldn't look guilty when i went outside to my parents.
