After WWII, the U.S. and Soviet Union soon began to view each other as rivals due to their increasingly different political views.
These differences led to many indirect(proxy) wars.
Never any direct military engagement but military buildup as well as political battles for support around the world.

Stalin installed "satellite" communist governments in Eastern Europe countries of Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, and East Germany.
Europe became divided into two political regions; a mostly democratic Western Europe and a Communist Eastern Europe. This was known as the "Iron Curtain" it was names this to represent the division of Europe.
Containment Policy - the idea was that if the U.S. could prevent the Soviets from expanding, their system would be eventually fall apart. This led to the Containment Policy, this could keep communism from spreading diplomatic, economic, and military force.

In August of 1946, the Soviets tried to establish communist governments in Greece and Turkey. President Truman asked Congress for $400 Million to help combat communist aggressions via military and economic aid. Later on, this pledged the U.S. to fight communism worldwide.

In June 1947, Secretary of State George Marshall proposed economic aid to all European nations rebuilding. Western Europe began to recover and weakened the "appeal" of communism. New trade markets were opened.
In June 1948, the Soviet Union closed all access to W. Berlin for the next 11 months, Truman sent cargo planes to drop food, supplies,m medicine, etc. to the people of the Soviet Union. Realizing they were beaten and suffering a public relations nightmare, Stalin lifted the blockade in May of 1949.

NATO- The Berlin Blockade increased the western Europe's fear of SOviet aggression. in April 1949, the U.S. formed a military alliance with W. Europe: North Atlantic Treaty Organization. All NATO members agree to aid any other member who is attacked.
Warsaw Pact - After NATO was founded, the Soviet Union was alarmed by the news. In response to this they formed a military alliance with eastern Europe and named it the warsaw Pact. By the mid 1950's, two powerful alliance were facing each other in Europe.
NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization, USA, France, G.B. and West Germany, Capitalism, and Democracy. Warsaw Pact - Pro soviet countries, USSR, and all countries controlled by the USSR, Communism.

The fear was Communist subversion (an effort to secretly weaken a society and overthrow the government. the House of Unamerican Activities Committee created an investigation of disloyalty on the part of citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having communist
