The company aimed to supply gold, trade, and staple products to its stockholders .</p><p><br></p><p>-Land Scarcity in England: Land was becoming scarce in England, and the law of primogeniture meant only the eldest sons could inherit it . This led to a desire to find cheap land in America . </p><p><br></p><p>-Establishing a Foothold: In 1606, the Virginia Company of London and the Plymouth Company were granted rights to colonize North America . Their goal was to find a location secure from discovery by the Spanish . </p>]]></description>

         <title>Key people who led England’s colonizing</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li><p>John Smith: He took over as the leader of the settlement in 1608 and implemented strict rules, such as "He that will not worke shall not eate," to ensure the colonists' survival. Smith also established trade relations with the Powhatan Indians, which helped the colony obtain much-needed food supplies.</p><p><br></p></li><li><p>Thomas West (Lord Delaware): He arrived in Jamestown in 1610 with additional settlers and supplies, preventing the abandonment of the colony . Like Smith, West was an effective leader who helped to stabilize Jamestown during its early years.</p><p><br></p></li><li><p>John Rolfe: In 1612, Rolfe began cultivating tobacco, a sweeter variety from Trinidad, which became a successful export crop for the colony . Tobacco cultivation provided Jamestown with a much-needed source of income, securing its economic future.</p><p><br></p></li><li><p>Thomas Gates: The company determined that Thomas Gates would hold that position for the first year of the new charter. He sailed for Virginia in June with a fleet of nine ships and hundreds of new colonists.</p></li></ul>]]></description>
