This is where the EYP picks an area of development that they want to look at on there target child, such as Physical, Intellectual, Language, Emotional and Social. (P.I.L.E.S). Then the EYP will pick the best method of observation for the area of development they've chose, this could an Narrative which is best for language, sociogram which is good for social, Time sample which is for emotional.
The point of doing observations on children are to find out what areas of development they are good at, so, ahead or behind, such as where they are at with the milestones, with their age.

After doing the observation on the target child, EYP will need to look at the results and evaluate any concerns, that they may have about the child, it is mainly looking at to see if they are ahead or behind in the age milestones. It will also be looking at previous observations seeing if the child has impoved in that area of development.

Why EYP's use the planning cycle

EYP's use the planning cycle to assess and plan for children's next steps. The EYP will need to observe the child to see where they are in the every area of development: physical, Intellectual, language, emotional, social. (P.I.L.E.S)
will be able to put additional needs into place - EYP's will be able to adapt to their provision which will meet the needs of the children. Allowing EYP's to introduce new appropriate changes to their own practice as they will need to meet specific needs of all children as an individual.
Children's progress needs to be tracked for their school readiness to see if they have developed basic skills to sure that all children are making progress to reach their full potential. This is known as a known as summative assessment, which is children having a basic subject knowledge, understand and skill and main capabilities like writing, socialising, communicating, letter sounds (phonics) and counting. It is important to act early if there are signs of potential development delay because early treatment is important for improving children's skills and abilities.

As observations is key to help EYP's understand children's learning development but can also find out more information on the child, just as them as an individual.
EYP's observe children for specific reasons one of them being for see what stage of development they are at and also to learn about the child, another one could be looking at the observation and seeing if the child needs any additional needs put into place. Another reason of observing children would be during transitions and the reviewing the environment by how the child reacts and behaves to the change and environment.

Seeing if the child is at the right stage of development within the age they are at in the EYFS (Development matters)

It is important that Practitioners have knowledge on the Observation, assessment and planning cycle, with how it works. They would also need to have the understanding and skills of the observations, in why and what they are used for, an example could be an EYP needs to do an observation on a child about their physical development EYP's will need to know the correct method of observation that will show that child's physical development.
some of the skills the practitioner will need is the every day daily skills - looking, listening and recording. Some of the other skills needed is knowing
A reason why early years practitioners must have an understanding of observations is so practitioners can reflect on their own practice

The reason of practitioners observing children is to point out their strength's and weakness. An example of this would be looking at the child physical development with their fine motor skills and seeing if they write - but child struggles to hold a pencil. So, therefore the EYP will be able to plan activities that would help the child develop the skills needed, they would do this by gripping on to small objects, threading, colouring with pencil.
Making sure the child's needs are met, so making sure that their efforts don't go un-notice and that they are appreciated and celebrated, whether that's with a sticker or a dip in a dip-box or general praise. EYP's do this to encourage children to do it more and be motivated, as they get a positive result at the end of it. EYP's could put children's work on show to remind children what they did, or allow them to take the work home as children love showing their success to others.

They are issus to when professionals record and share information about children, which includes:
Consent - Information should only be collected of a child, when they have consent of the child's main care giver. Parents will be able to see this information if requested, but only about their own child. The only other people that the information will be shared with is professionals, again may need constant.
Confidentiality - This kind of information needs to be sorted securely, where it cant be accessed by anyone. EYP's should not share this information with anyone or discuss. an example not talking about it in the staff room or out side the setting with friends. If information is stored on the computer it is important that step are taken to make sure that information does not get into the wrong hands, and shared about.
