The peer-review article I chose is titled 'Aligning Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports to Maximize School Counselors' Efforts'.

Reflection- This article talked about how Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) helped schools, "...display lower levels of aggression and disruption, higher levels of attending, pro-social behavior, and emotional regulation, and were 33% less likely to receive office discipline referrals (Goodman-Scott, et al., 2018)".

There are three tiers to PBIS that could make positive change possible in the education system. The first is the School Counseling Core Curriculum, which are activities for all students to utilize for their benefits. The second is Responses Services such as Crisis Intervention and Preventions and small group sessions. The last tier is Consultation, Collaboration, and Advocacy. This is to help the student receive the best support, even if it is from a completely different provider or placement. All of these tiers are solely based on data, research, and evidence.

I personally love how straight-forward and easily readable this article was. I learned quite a bit on how much PBIS can help not just one student but an entire school positively and effectively. I also like how the article still explains how even though there can be many programs to implement positive change inside schools, there is still a chance that something may go wrong in one instance or another.

Reference:

Emily, G.-S., Jennifer, B.-B., & Peg, D.

I believe that in order to become the best school counselor that I can be, I need to strive for inclusion of all groups of people, regardless of what they might look like or go through. I need to be respectful and open-minded towards not just the student, but also towards other individuals that will work together with me for the student's benefit: their family, other faculty, principal, etc.

I need to work on being able to ask questions whenever I am feeling overwhelmed or unsure of the next step. I should learn to collaborate with other people instead of working on my own.

I should treat every student with an unbiased and compassionate perspective no matter what is going on in their lives.

The area I need to improve in the most would be collaborating and communicating with fellow schools and counselors. I need to learn that this career is not a one-man job. With the help of others and their own expertise, I will grow and become more knowledgable in identifying and assessing the needs of the students.

My results were quite interesting to say the least. It said that I have no preference in terms of who I feel most comfortable around: Straight people or Gay people. It surprised me initially because I myself am in the LGBT+ community, so I first thought that my implicit bias would lean more toward that side of the spectrum.

But the more I think about the results, the more I realize that I believe it is amazing to have equal amounts of positive experiences with both straight and LGBT+ individuals. I see it as a good thing that I was able to not have a preference when it came to my own sexuality vs. how I might see others around me based on my own experiences.

Looking at my results for the Age IAT did not shock me too much. As someone who is 24 years old, I feel like I knew how biased my mind was towards individuals who look and act a certain age (65+). I definitely need to work on having a more positive mindset towards people who are older, maybe by realizing that these individuals can still do many things similarly to young adults. They are not crippled or handicapped just because of their age, even though we learn in school how our bodies change throughout the years.
