We are using a bunsen burner to burn eight different chemicals with a popisical stick and see the different colors that appear while we are burning the chemicals on the popsical stick.

Why does this happen?

This happens because when you heat the eight elements the electrons gain energy and can jump into any of the empty orbitals at higher levels. The elements went from their ground state to their excited state.

What happened?

What happened was when we put the coffee stirrer in the flame, the coffee stirrer burned, and gave off a certain color. The color depended on the chemical that was on the coffee stirrer.

How did you determine your unknown chemical?

We determined our unknown chemical by recieving the stick with our unknown chemical on it, and then we put it over the flame and observed what color it was. We wrote down the other colors from all the dfferent chemicals and while we were burning the stick, we saw it was green. And that would make our unknown chemical be Ba2+. That's how we determinded our unknown chemical. By the color.
