When Muhammad died the Islamic faith divided into Sunni and Shia. Since Muhammad never said who should lead to religion the two diversions were divided on who it should be. The Sunni thought the leader should be voted for and could be anyone that qualified. The Shia thought it should be Muhammad's closest relative. This division lead to many deaths and wars.

The Sunni and the Shia split after the death of Muhammad. This is because after his death, one group wanted to vote traditionally while the others wanted to chose his cousin\son in law\first convert. All of these arguments led to them to split up.

After the death of Muhammad, the islamic community decided to give Abu Bakr leadership of islam, however, some people thought that it should belong to Ali. All of this lead to the separation of islam, Sunni and Shia, even when it split, there was plenty of wars and conflict that took place, even to this day!

The reason why the Sunni and Shia split was because of the argument between who should lead Islam. After their leader Muhammad died, Muslims argued on who should be the successor. The Sunnis believed that Abu should lead their religion, because Abu was Muhammad's close friend and has experience in leading. On the other hand the Shia believed that Ali should lead Islam because, he was a relative of Muhammad. Then, after an long argument Abu became the rightful successor of Muhammad.
