A child's ability to communicate involves an integration of body parts and systems allowing hearing, understanding, organizing thoughts, learning and using language. What really stuck out and I loved was that research suggest that babies instinctively turn their heads to face the source of sound and can remember sounds heard before birth. Even though infants cannot fully hear as isn't fully developed at birth they can hear loud noises and pitches. Their auditory symptoms are better developed than their sight systems. Auditory acuity devolves swiftly. The infant inhibits motor activity in response to strong auditory stimuli or when listening to a strong human voice. Sensory motor activity which involves use of the sense of the organs and body muscles is vital to language acquisition.
Appropriate hearing behaviors for different ages-
Birth- Awakens to loud sounds, startles, cries and reacts to noise
0-3 Months- Turns head to parents voice, reacts by smiling, coos, calms down when similar voice is calm.
4-6 months- looks toward environmental noise, babbles, seems to understand no
7-12 months- responds to own name, may say some words but not clearly, enjoys word games.
Brain searchers recommend that educators shall take these courses of action-
- talking to babies frequently
- cuddling babies and being hands on
- giving babies freedom
-providing safe objects to explore and manipulate

The beginning of communication involves teachers providing an environment where infants can thrive. Babies have an instinct; they turn their heads to face the origin of sound and can remember sounds heard before birth. Infants look at adult face for facial expression. With a stable loving care and a happy place for infants they start to form bonds. It becomes an important part for communication and language development for infants. When infants develop joint attentional focus the teacher points at objects to connect the words. Communication with parents and families are important for language development and positive language at home. The tasks of toddlers they are categorizing words they hear around them. Toddlers are putting together two words sentences when they are playing by themselves using imagination and they use movement gestures to go with their words. Using picture books with simple words and colorful photos lets toddler connect the words. Social interaction helps toddlers to develop more verbal skills needed. Preschool years, preschoolers communicate with words and movement to communicate their needs, desires, and feelings. Preschoolers learn to listen and take turn in speaking when having a conversation with each other. Having the skills to listen and speak when it is their turn, they are learning to have a true conversation. Picture books are important for preschooler to build language skills and visual thinking skills.

There was so many helpful information on the reading of the 3 chapters. I got to understand and learn that language is developing at infant age. An infants behaviors and vocalizing efforts start with crying, body movements, and body positions and then they start to coo and make noises to get our attention. To help support their language development we should be engaged with them and reading them books, sing, and allow them many opportunities to draw and scribble. At toddler age they are very aware and always listening and learning to sort sounds and words and trying to develop their understanding to those new words. A toddlers first words relate to significant and important people, and objects in their daily lives. The words are usually easy enough for them to be able to pronounce and gestures will accompany their words. Even though toddlers language is limited at the moment, they understand so much more than they can express. Reading to toddlers continues to help their language development. For the best learning experience we should do so when the child is the most engaged and curious and not forget that language can also develop during play and fun activities. For young preschool age children their language will start to flourish even if it may seem unclear at times. A close teacher or caregiver can understand and uncover meaning to their speech. Their language development should be encouraged by lots of play like pretend play.

It was very helpful to learn about the beginning of communication. I
feel this information will help me become a better teacher and parent
when I become a parent. It is important to watch for the child’s cues.
The book mentions several cues that the child does to communicate with
their adults. Babies instinctively turn their heads to face sound, or
smile or cry to communicate their wants and needs. They also
instinctively turn their heads and open their mouths when they are
hungry. They can recognize familiar voices. If the adult can cue into
these communication devices the child has, the attachment will be
stronger.

Appropriate hearing behaviors:

Birth: Awakens to loud sounds, startles, cries and reacts to noise

0-3 months: Turns head to hear parents voice, reacts by smiling, coos,
calms when hears familiar voice or voice is soothing

4-6 months: Looks toward environmental noise, babbles, seems to
understand no, makes wants know with voice

7-12 months: Responds to own name, may say some words but not clearly
articulated words, babbles repeat consonants or vowel sounds, enjoys
words games

Adults are very important in the development of language in children.
Toddlers learn from the adults around them. The toddler is now trying
to put the words they have learned into sentences. They are learning
that words have meaning other than just symbols. Pragmatic skill
development is important at this time. Adults can aid this development
by having conversations with the child, explain things and listen to
their communication. By describing the actions the child is doing,
helps them to understand more. It is important to use positive
language vs negative.

Chapter 1:
The ability of a child to communicate begins the moment he or she is born. They communicate through eye contact, facial expressions, crying, smiles, and touch once they are born. It promotes healthy development and learning when adults respond with words, conversation, and attention. Children make gestures such as clenching their fists. Observing and getting to know the children with who we work with is essential for better communication. This can help us know where the children needs growth.
Chapter 2:
This chapter focuses on how adults can aid children's language development by intruding new vocabulary to them. This chapter also discusses how children's pragmatic skills develop and how they begin to understand how sentences are used. This chapter also mentioned how attachment problems on children can affect the child's development growth. Also, reading out loud to children can be really beneficial to them.

Chapter 1 & 2 Summary

1) The importance of responsiveness on a child's appearance and temperament is covered in Chapter 1. Caregivers' first worry is whether the kid is okay or needs anything, which prompts them to continually monitor the newborn for indications. Because newborns are natural communicators, they grin, glance about, cry, suck, and cuddle as preprogrammed signals. However, as skills improve, they rapidly catch up on the caregiver's activities and become attention-seeking and demanding. Hearing, comprehending, organizing ideas, learning, and language usage are all dependent on the physiological systems that allow a kid to communicate. I thought it was fascinating that newborns began to communicate as soon as they are born. Attachment is formed via meaningful and consistent interactions between the child, family, and caregivers. Infant communication and language development are heavily influenced by the quality and quantity of caregiver attention. When it comes to early language development, the environment plays a significant effect. Auditory acuity improves quickly, sensory-motor development is critical for language acquisition, and perception is recorded and stored, acting as a foundation for future speaking and language development. The figure below shows the development of auditory perception in children.

2) The second chapter focuses on how adults may help children acquire language skills as they go from uttering words to using sentences. Toddlers are now acquiring phrase word order, as well as word meaning and nonverbal communication. They're studying pragmatics, which means they're learning how to utilize language. This is a significant achievement because it teaches youngsters how to properly communicate in order to satisfy their needs. A collection of examples of pragmatic talents is provided below. You can see how crucial adult/child interactions are in having meaningful discussions for language development by looking at the list. This chapter offers advice on how to create the best language-stimulating environment for toddlers, which may be very useful for caregivers. Expose the child to language with a speech that is neither too simple nor too complex, but slightly above the child's current level, stay in tune with the child's actual ability, omit unreasonable speech demands while encouraging attempts, remember that positive reinforcement is more effective than negative feedback, accept the child's own formulation of a language concept, provide a current model, make a point of being responsive, and follow the child's intuition. In this chapter, I also appreciate the list of child linguistic traits. The chapter discusses the value of music and emphasizes that children enjoy music and that utilizing music rather than not using music may frequently teach a bigger lesson.

What I found interesting unlearning is that communication starts at birth really and the more invested we are in looking for a child's needs in communication the sooner child will interact. Communication status with babies imitating their mother's/caregivers. I have a toddler in my home and he is two. I was able to relate the information on communication to what I see with him. Not letting him point to an object like for instance a cup and showing him the cup and say "c" cup, giving him the information by showing him the object and pronouncing for him is helpful and has taught him words.
