Just this week, I had an instance that consisted of this. On Wednesday night, a group of children from my ministry wanted to play a game. We played "mail man". This game involves a mailbox and envelopes. One at a time, a person steps up to the line and throws the envelope and try to make it inside the mailbox. However, all of these envelopes weigh different amounts and are all different sizes. Therefore, it makes it harder to make every envelope into the mailbox. None of the children had played this game before so it was trial and error as they played. However, as they continued to play, they figured out that holding the corner of the envelope and throwing harder/lighter depending on the weight of the envelope helped them to make it in the mailbox. They then shared this information with the other kids, and it seemed as the next student after next was making more envelopes into the mailbox.

Another example of this, a few of the same students wanted to play four square. Only a handful of them knew how to play the game but they decided to play and let the others watch them so they could learn. After one round had finished, the next group of students were able to play. They caught on very fast and figured out techniques to bounce the ball to get others out.

Recently I had one of the children from my ministry ask to help me on their science fair project. I noticed that this related directly with this topic. The child had to decide how much effort they wanted to put in on learning and researching their chosen topic so that their end result would be winning the science fair. The child surprised me a lot because she decided to create her topic about plastic straws in the ocean. She researched so many things and even began to start creating her own version of throw away straws that disintegrate! I was so shocked that she decided to put so much effort into the project because she is normally a C student because she doesn't put a lot of effort into her work.

Another example of this is a few years ago my aunt decided she wanted to attend college to have a better career. She had graduated high school about a decade ago and never went to college. I didn't think she was serious because she never really puts a lot of effort into things. I thought that she would be unsuccessful and dropout once she saw how much effort and time, she had to put into it. However, she proved me wrong and graduated back in May of last year!

A few months ago, I was working with a friend of mine who is an interior designer. She asked me to help her on a big project just to have extra hands to paint and place things where they go. Of course, I said yes. However, her client decided that she didn't like the navy-blue paint color that had already been done. Therefore, my friend and I went to the store and grabbed the new can of paint to repaint the wall with. Once we started to paint over the navy-blue color with the light blue color, we noticed it wasn't coming out the way we had hoped. My friend had to do some research and figure out why the navy color was still showing and why the texture of the paint was different. From her research she found that if she had bought a matte paint it would cover the navy-blue color with just 1 coat. With the new knowledge, she waited a few days to let the paint dry and went back to the store to get a can of the same paint but in a matte finish. My friend found out how complex painting can be with little knowledge.

Another example of this, a few days ago my husband’s timing belt needed to be changed on his car. However, he had no idea how to fix it. When he took it to the auto shop, they quoted him around $200 to get it fixed. He decided that he wanted to try and watch a YouTube video and see if he could fix it himself for cheaper. With the research he did and the help of his friend they fixed it for less than $40.

After completing the 2 knowledge tests for my math class, we were required to collaborate with 2 other students to come up with a song/dance/activity for a way to solve math problems and remember formulas. (Background story is under Constructive column). My other partners in this assignment decided that we should create a dance type chant for our formula. One of my partners is really good at yelling because she is a sport announcer and my other partner is good at dancing. I am good at writing. Putting all of the things that we were good at helped us to collaborate and create the formula chant.

Another example, I recently was asked by a few people to help them with a logo for a new business. They knew that I was into playing around with graphic designs and photoshop. We all collaborated on this project with the strengths that we all had and created an amazing logo.

In my class, Teaching Elementary Math I, we took a practice test to see what we know about teaching math problems. Most of the class didn't do so well. In class we went over the answers for the problems and marked whether we got them right or not. Afterwards we went over the correct way to solve the problems and end up with the correct answer. During this process we were able to view and correct the mistakes that we made. After this we were given a second version of the test to take, it was almost the same as the 1st test just had different numbers in the problems. This 2nd part of the test was to help us as students articulate how to correctly complete the problems and show that we understand them.

Another example of this, was when my parent child relations teacher asked us to fill out this questionnaire on how we think we will be as parents or if we already are parents, how we are as parents. This questionnaire gave us results to tell us the type of parenting style we have. We took this knowledge that we learned and had to apply it to everyday situations with how we respond to people in our lives.
