Katniss Everdeen embodies the idea of self reliance through her ability to speak her mind and is unafraid to stand out. Katniss has accepted her "place the divine providence has found" for her through embracing her role as the mockingbird who symbolizes the rebellion. She exemplifies "names and customs" through her relationships with all those that she meets and the strength that she provides for her people. Although her actions are viewed as hostile to the Capital, Katniss is "misunderstood" as she leads the rebellion to peace and the end to the monarchical society that they live in.

"Blackbird" by the Beatles appears to be heavily influenced by Emerson's essay. In the song, they sing, "take these broken wings and learn to fly", conveying that we must take off into the world and make a difference. Not only must we go out into the world, but we must see it as well, as they sing that we must "take these sunken eyes and learn to see." Emerson conveys that we cannot be "cowards fleeing before a revolution" but that we must embrace it as the Beatles have demonstrated as well. Both the Beatles and Emerson wish for people to step out of their comfort zone and see the world for what it truly is.

Not only were Pythagoras, Socrates, Jesus, Luther, Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton misunderstood, but so was Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist working to end the segregation of whites and blacks. During this time, many public places were deemed as either for white people or for the colored. Water fountains, bathrooms, and restaurants were all segregated to keep people "happy". Martin Luther King Jr. believed that we should walk on this earth together in his famous "I have a dream" speech. King Jr. could be viewed as highly misunderstood by whites who believed that they were superior and could not associate with colored people. Many people disagreed with King Jr. but his role in the civil rights movement has greatly impacted our world today as his speech is still influential around the world.

Society of Individualists

I believe that we cannot have a society of individualists because then everybody would have many differing opinions that may contradict with another's. If everyone could be individualists and do their own thing then there would be no control and war would erupt. We would no longer be united if everyone went their own way and did their own thing. There must be some type of order and structure within a society and if everyone disobeyed them then a society wouldn't exist.
