In the song, they sing, "take these broken wings and learn to fly", conveying that we must take off into the world and make a difference. Not only must we go out into the world, but we must see it as well, as they sing that we must "take these sunken eyes and learn to see." Emerson conveys that we cannot be "cowards fleeing before a revolution" but that we must embrace it as the Beatles have demonstrated as well. During this time, many public places were deemed as either for white people or for the colored. Water fountains, bathrooms, and restaurants were all segregated to keep people "happy". Martin Luther King Jr. believed that we should walk on this earth together in his famous "I have a dream" speech. King Jr. could be viewed as highly misunderstood by whites who believed that they were superior and could not associate with colored people. If everyone could be individualists and do their own thing then there would be no control and war would erupt. We would no longer be united if everyone went their own way and did their own thing.
