Jean Michel Basquiat was born in December 22, 1960 Brooklyn New York. Basquiat had developed his love for art at a very early age, usually drawing on his father's accounting papers. At 7 years old, he was hit by a car while he was playing on the street, which resulted in him being hospitalized for a long period of time. After being gifted the book "Gray's anatomy" from his mother, Basquiat studied the book throughout his childhood, which overall lead to the depiction of human anatomy in his later artwork.

Dear Jean Micheal Basquiat,

I am researching you because ever since I was young, I have been deeply interested in your work, not only as an artist, but as a person. You’ve affected and influenced many artists, myself included. Your work has inspired me to expand my creativity, and embrace my own individuality. Especially when it comes to art, people oftentimes forget that art at its core form is meant for self expression, a way of expressing emotions that words can’t truly describe. For a short period of time, people oftentimes forced me to express my art a certain way. People would tell me my art was "too weird" or "too cartoonish", and it made me dislike my own art for a long amount of time. But now that I'm older, I've accepted my art style as my own, and I've learnt once again how to express myself freely through art, not caring about anyone's opinion. You helped inspire me through this time in my art journey, and helped me realize that art is a unique form of expression, and no one should ever take that from you. Expressing your emotions and being yourself is art, and I would like to thank you for helping me realize that. My question for you would be: If you had any advice to give to young artists, what would it be? And, what is your favorite piece of art that you have made?

-Much love, Leila.

Local boy to art icon

Jean Michel Basquiat is an American artist commonly known for his unique neo-expressionism art-style. He was primarily famous around 1980 and rose to fame. He went from a local boy from New York to an art icon knowl all around the world.

Basquiat was born on December 22, 1960. His father, Gerald Basquiat was an accountant, and would oftentimes leave piles of paper for Basquiat to draw and scribble on when he was young, which sparked an early love for art in the young Basquiat's heart. After reading and studying the book Gray's anatomy, which was gifted to him by his mother, Basquiat had sparked a newly found love for human anatomy, and how the human body works. This would become a recurring subject matter in his art for the future.

Growing up for Basquiat wasn't easy, living in poverty and discrimination, Basquiat found comfort and escapism through his art, and he would be found all around New York, spraying his graffiti tag "SAMO" all throughout New York's streets. As a troubled youth, Basquiat had fell into vices such as drugs and alcohol, and would often have nowhere to sleep, as he was homeless at the time. Life for Basquiat was hard, yet, he continued to paint and sell his artwork. This would soon pay off, since one day he luckily ran into Andy Warhol at a restaurant. Basquiat sold Warhol some painted postcards, but that wouldn't be the last time Basquiat and Warhol would cross paths.

Warhol had became intrigued with the young Basquiat, and after meeting Basquiat yet again years later, Warhol offered to mentor Basquiat. Basquiat happily agreed, having looked up to Warhol growing up. This newly sparked friendship helped shape Basquiat into the artist he would soon become. He took Andy's art advice, all while maintaining his iconic and unique style. They would even collaborate together, an example would be a painting called "Paramount", in which the concept of the painting was to deface each other's work, which at the time was an unspeakable concept in the art world. Ruining each other's work in a joint painting was so controversially unique, yet so well received by the art community.

Basquiat's hard work had finally paid off it seems, and he was as successful as he had wished he would be when he was younger, but, Basquiat's life started to go downhill when he got addicted to drugs yet again. Basquiat's addiction to drugs had been a persistent part of his life, however, it was only until towards the end of his life that Basquiat's addiction started to spiral out of control, which would end up killing him on August 12, 1988 due to an overdose.

Despite all this, Basquiat had cemented his name into the art community. After reaching stardom in the 80's, Basquiat's name has been spoken and mentioned time and time again when recalling the Neo-expressionist art movement. He gave commentary on topics like as class struggle and race, which made him such an important part of art history. Today, we remember Jean-Michel Basquiat as the local boy who turned into an art icon.
