The book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn takes place in a time period a lot of people are trying to erase. They are tearing down monuments and trying to remove historical documents. The one thing people tend to forget about is that the history is still located in the minds of the population. I agree with Toni on how the events and actions that take place in the book are awful and inhumane but they happened. The book is sort of a reminder of the time. So if people look at the book for its story I think they should be fine.

The N-Word

In the past the word was strictly used to isolate a person of color. Then it wasn't derogatory because the only thing that people knew was the power the word brought. Today however slavery is gone and so the use of the word brings a reference to its history and the effect it has. The word in my opinion should be gotten rid of and not even people of color should be able to use it. As in the first source located to the left the word was shocking and appalling to the author, it has the same effect on others today.

During the times of slavery people only saw people of color as pieces of property and that they are only equal to the other people of their race. After the 9/11 attacks people only saw people of middle eastern decent as terrorists. In Huck Finn Jim tries to help the doctor but then is attacked by the mob just because is a black man when in reality he is part of the reason a white boy survived, they thought nothing of his good deed. It's very similar to how the white man only saw the color of the store clerks skin.

One thing some people should never do is, white people using the N word. In Huck Finn it was used as a derogatory term as well as a term to catagorize a person of color to a certain group. Since the time period of Huck Finn slavery has been abolished and people of color are now free just like everyone else in the U.S.. So when a white person uses the word its roots dig back to the times of slavery. White people never should have had the ability to use the word and especially now they do not have the right to use the word. No matter the context, music, conversation, or anything that is not educationally based is a breakdown of the world we have fought so hard for.

Minorities have always been targets for discrimination. Although the mistreatment and discrimination of the Native Americans pre-dates the issues the African Americans and others have gone through in the U.S.. In Huck Finn, Jim and Huck never interact with Native Americans but at one point the King and Duke dress Jim up as an Indian and the description they make of this Indian is highly incorrect and racist. I bet though if we were to ask Huck to describe an Indian he would speak of the stereotypical savage people that kill for fun and hate whites.

More and more religion is becoming a sanctuary or escape from the evil, hate, and issues in the world. Many churches now a days are teaching their members ways to prevent racism and also the effects racism has. Although in Huck Finn, some of the religious teachings of the time accepted slavery and the mistreatment of minorities. Back then religion could be seen as an escape but many blacks and others couldn't actually to a church so religion was only through self prayer and belief.

In Huck Finn's time period there was huge debate over whether or not minorities and people of color should be respected at all. I have seen the difference in life between the East and West coast and i agree with this girl. The population is so much more diverse in the west compared to the east. It's easy to compare this to the North and South during civil times. One knew of something but didn't do it while the other did. The west knows of racism but instead it accepts diversity. While the East coast especially New England I've seen is not diverse and doesn't know how to treat someone who's not white. I personally have seen this as i have lived on both coasts multiple times each.

Then blacks weren't even really seen as people, let alone a standing member of society. Today there are still predominately white communities but when a person of a minority or color visits there's no violence in almost all cases towards that person as well as no one yelling derogatory words and phrases at them
