Put a large magnet on the 0 so everyone can see. Tell them this represents the number of blocks Jack is using in the story.
During reading: Have students come up to the board and move the magnet along the number line as Jack continues to add more blocks to his creation.
After reading:
1) What things did Jack build? (literal question)
2) How many blocks did Jack use? How do you know?
3) Say, "Hmm... I wonder what you could build, and how many blocks you would need to build it..."
