Todd Parr's unique brilliance will appeal to both children and adults, as he pays specific attention to the always, often irrational emotions that we all experience.

Ideas- Category is generating ideas, focusing in, and seeing fascinating features; and I believe this picture book did just that. This book is aimed at young children who are just learning to read, so it is also perfect for those who are learning to write, as well. This book will encourage them to talk about their many emotions in a kid-friendly, approachable manner, conveyed in Parr's signature vivid, vibrant colors and hilarious situations.

All we have to do now is trust it.

Voice- If this book is not in the voice category, I don’t know what else would be. The title itself is a Voice. Grace Byers, is an activist, she has written a beautiful, poetic homage to loving yourself, respecting others, and being nice to one another. If that isn't voice writing we want to teach our children to write, then we must check ourselves.

It is a great mentor text because it uses the trait of voice extremely well. It does this with simple language as well. You can use everyday language to express feelings, the point of view of the author and most important to me, you feel the connection.

It covers various issues about not only acceptance, but also diversity. No wonder it is a #1 NY Best Seller list. This book’s voice is all about a school where students can learn from one another's cultures and develop as individuals. Diversity is celebrated as a strength at this institution.
It is voice, because the writer is deeply invested in the subject, and the story has a distinct tone and feel that is indisputably hers and she wants others to feel how she feels. This is why she uses descriptive language when describing all the different types of characters. This is why it is a great example for voice as a mentor text, so kids write about what their voice is.

The Lion and the Mouse Book by Aesop

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaRvlcFuIUQ

Lion awakens a sleeping mouse by threatening it. The mouse apologizes and points out that such poor prey would offer the lion no honor. The lion then accepts the mouse's offer and releases it. Hunters eventually capture the lion. The mouse recalls its pet when it hears it roar, and gnaws through the ropes to rescue it. The lesson of the story is that kindness is rewarded, and that it is better to be kind than to be merciless.

Organization- Even if this is a wordless picture book it has a hook, and a narrative storyline with not only an ending, but a moral. This is why I loved this book as a child. It is a great book for mentor organization! To make your pre-emergent and emergent writers alike to think of the organization trait.
