Ideas on how to adapt (or create) materials for ESP by María Soledad Loutayf

Materials are every resource you use in the class to help students acquire linguistic skills whether they are commercial materials, texts you choose or realia you bring to the classroom. Adapting or creating materials should be a principled practice that meets a pedagogical aim. The aim of this Padlet is to share how you adapt or design for ESP and the principle or objective behind that adaptation. Examples are more than welcome.

When I choose the materials for my Land Surveying Engineering students, I choose topics they have already studied in previous subjects, for example Topography. So, first they read the text I chose and then they have to compare the content presented with what they already know to find similarities and differences. There are some instruments for measuring that may be used in USA that are not used in San Juan, for example. And some steps in the measuring processes are different so they need to really understand the English text and recall what they already know. Of course, it is crucial to work with a specialist in the field and prepare the class as full as posible. All the same, students always have something to teach the teacher as regards content and their previous experience.

As for the design of materials, I take the time to read the anual plannings of the curricula of both primary and secondary schools of the grades and courses I teach in. I select materials from varied sources and create my own, so it ends up being a blending of both authentic and non-authentic input, having their previous knowledge in L1 as an irrefutable advantage. This does not only bring a certain balance to the activities carried out in the classes but it also enhances specific content, which is contextualised as much as possible in the quest of meaningful learning.

Juan Ignacio.-

It outlines the main beliefs and principles which constitute the general framework for teaching materials development and summarizes the major explicit and implicit teachers’ beliefs which inevitably reflect on the process of materials design. This paper also tackles the issues of assumed abilities and training for developing and/or adapting teaching materials offered to ESP teachers in the attempt to answer the everlasting question whether being a good ESP teacher automatically implies being a good materials designer.

For example, I taught Imagism last month and we used content from a textbook that featured Ezra Pound's "In a Station of the Metro". The idea of the activity was to try to recreate this short poem by changing the setting to Tucuman, and depicting the traditional problems my students encounter with the means of transport they use everyday. I generally name this activity "Tucumanize it" and students love it.
Ignacio Lau

This task is useful for all levels and for all types of courses. Students will have an acrostic with my name and I will write some words related to my personal information.

                  CINTIA

BUENOS AIRES

              JANUARY

                  THIRTY-NINE

              CHILDREN

               MARRIED

a. Students will have to do their own acrostics with their names and complete it using words related to their personal information. We can use Padlet, Jamboard, the whiteboard for this activity.

b. Post-writing activity. Students will have to read their classmates’ acrostics to know some information about their classmates. These activities will be helpful to get to know each other.

c. Listening activity. Game: “Lie Detector” Students will watch a video with my acrostic and personal information but this time I will include three statements that are true and 2 statements that are false and they must detect the lies. We can also use the LMS or a resource such as Jamboard or Padlet for this task.

Here I include the link with the video:

https://youtu.be/JonnP8EpcIM

Students will have to detect the lies and post their responses. At the end of the week I will include my answers.

Students will have to do the same. They will provide personal information about them and they must include some false information. For instance, they may mention two statements that are not true, and their classmates will have to detect the lies. In the acrostics, learners may write words as I did and record themselves giving the information. If we have used the acrostics with personal information before they would have to remember what the students have mentioned to detect the lies. Students will be invited to record a video and provide the link or include a file. I may use a forum discussion or Padlet. Structures suggested for this activity are: I’m…. I’m…..years old. I’m from….. I have….I’m married/single. Students will have to post a response to at least one classmate mentioning the lies they could detect. Students will have to answer the posts at the end of the week and mention what information is true and false. They will have to write the full sentences this time.
The example I provided was acrostics with names to work personal information but we can work with acrostics with other words. For instance, we can adapt this activity and use it in ESP too. We could work with the word ENGINEERING or with anything that we want and we can brainstorm vocabulary or to summarize information about any topic. Depending on the level of our students we may ask them to write words or sentences.
Students enjoy working with acrostics. I use them a lot!

This activity is very funny and at the same time reinforces the four skills: speaking, writing, listening and reading in elementary school students. The activity is carried out as a review and to consolidate the vocabulary after the students have studied in previous classes topics related to different foods, colors, animals, means of transport among others. The teacher writes the categories on the blackboard and tells a student to write, for example, animals that begin with the letter C. The student must write the animal that he/she remembers with that letter, then read aloud. After that, Then the student chooses a classmate and indicates another category and the game continuous. In order to become the class more enjoyable is appropriate to reward the student has written and listened more words. At the same time, Students feel self- confidence and motivated. I always try to encourge my students and say them: make mistake is good because they have an chance to learn better.

Finding appropriate material for an ESP course tend to be difficult, that is why most teachers tend to design their own. When designing material for an ESP course one good idea is to adapt authentic material, such as videos or articles, in order to develop different activities.
For example, if we are going to teach the language to people that need it for business meetings or interviews, a good activity could be to look for a video where topics related to the students’ work field are discussed. We as teachers can use the video plus some questions designed by ourselves to practice their listening. In addition, we can then give them a transcription of the video so they can look for the vocabulary they don´t understand. Lastly, students can use the transcription to read it out loud.

An example:
After selecting a piece of reading material related to the topic, prepare a worksheet for students to work .
.- Check understanding by asking questions, eliciting ideas. It's good to discuss about the topic. This makes students to use their speaking skills .
.- Analyze vocabulary : Find transparent words , underline unknown words/ phrases, highlight linking words.
.- Identify referents, and say what they refer to in the different paragraphs.
.- Write the most important ideas from the reading.
.- Summarize the reading in own words.

.-

When it comes to choosing material for the classroom, I try to use authentic material that is parallel to the students’ main subject courses , but is not actually part of them; i.e. topics that could have been included in the main course, but were not (Aslrasouli, 2012) At the beginning of the course, for example, we work with titles of paintings by artists students study in other courses.

English for Cooking

I have never been in charge of teaching a course related to English for Cooking (chefs and catering). However, if I had the opportunity, I would use everything I could get my hands on. Preparing tailor-made instructional material is worthwhile, but time-consuming. I deem, balanced use of both readily available textbooks and tailor-made material would be the golden mean. The formers help the teacher not feel adrift from the contents and timetable they aimed at the beginning of the course. As Polona Vicic (2.011) argues in the paper Preparing material for ESP teachers,

" A final but significant factor is that psychologically a textbook represents something concrete and thus gives a measure of progress and achievement throughout the course (Haycraft, 1987). Consequently, when designing materials teachers should bear this in mind and prepare materials that present a logical whole and in which the sequence of units is logical and enables the students to see and evaluate their progress. "

The latter, helps the teachers to suit their students' needs taking into consideration their culture and the level of linguistic proficiency required. In addition to this, when there is not much material available, teachers should be ready to "set to" it.

When it comes to design some lessons, I could look for videos in which the cooks follow some recipes. There are great examples on YouTube. I could also elicit my Sts to listen to some fixed expressions such as "we need" or "you need to" the use of sequencing words, for example, "first, second, then, after that, finally" and logically, food-related vocabulary and
cooking techniques. I could provide the learners with interesting texts that present quantifiers, countable and uncountable nouns, and containers.
Secondly, I would teach them the classification of ingredients into subsets (Picture 1). Next, I would use activities to match cooking techniques to illustrative pictures (Picture 2). After that, I would let them speak about regional food or favorite dishes to foster their speaking skills. Finally, I would teach them how to write a process and the use of
commands.
This way, vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills are revised. The teacher's intervention within subjects that have particularities and specificities is crucial. It is
essential to clarify that this content could take a couple of lessons.
Marilena Salazar

Reference of pictures:
Flash on english for Cooking, Catering & Reception - by Catrin E.

I wirk with software developers who either own their own start-up in Argentina, the US, or the UK; or work for an IT company abroad.
The course level is C1 and the aim at learning business and area related content. We use a book they consider essential for Coders Professional Development called A Handbook of Agile Software Craftmanship by Martin, 2008.
As I read the chapters, I identify the main topics, area-related problems, and even the problems professionals have had in the area throughout time, to choose the week's activities. I choose two main aspects to develop and select the material.
First, I look for authentic websites which discuss the main topics of the lesson.
Second, I take all the pictures from the authentic source and highlight / summarize in one paragraph the main ideas which show the main content / topics.
Third, students look for the new items, or the main idea of the paragraph, they talk about what might be new and then I introduce the grammar or vocabulary topics -it also works for listening and writing skills.
To conclude, we work with the authentic text and they produce a text containing the topics and the purpose of the source in a situation similar to one at work.
