The United Nations Model (UN) is a popular activity for people interested in learning more about how the United Nations works. Every year, hundreds of thousands of students from all over the world and from all educational levels participate in it. Many of the current leaders in the judicial, governmental, business and artistic fields - including the United Nations itself - participated in the MUN when they were students.

General Assembly

The General Assembly is the representative, normative and deliberative body of the UN, and the only one that has universal representation since its 193 Member States are represented. These meet every year, in September, during the annual session, which takes place in the Hall of the General Assembly in New York. During its first days, a general debate is held in which numerous Heads of State participate and speak. Decision-making in the General Assembly requires a two-thirds majority when it comes to matters of vital importance; such as those related to peace and security, the admission of new members and budgetary matters. Decisions on other issues are made by a simple majority. Every year, a President is elected, who holds the position for one year.

Security Council

The Security Council has the primary responsibility, as stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations, for maintaining international peace and security. It has 15 Members (5 permanent and 10 non-permanent). Each one has one vote, although the five permanent ones have the power of veto. According to the Charter, all Member States are obliged to adopt the decisions of the Council. The Security Council directs the work of determining the existence of threats against peace or acts of aggression. It asks the parties involved in a conflict to reach an agreement by peaceful means and recommends adjustment methods or terms of agreement. In some cases, the Security Council may resort to the imposition of sanctions and even the authorization of the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security. The presidency of the Security Council rotates on a monthly basis.

Daily Work Program of the Security Council

Subsidiary bodies of the Security Council

Economic and Social Council

The Economic and Social Council is responsible for dealing with economic, social and environmental issues, through the review of the policies that are adapted, their coordination and the creation of recommendations. It also ensures the fulfillment of the internationally agreed development objectives. In addition, it serves as a central mechanism for the activities of the UN system and its agencies specialized in economic, social and environmental fields, since it supervises the subsidiary bodies and experts. The General Assembly elects the 54 Members of the Council for overlapping three-year terms. It is the central platform of the United Nations for reflection, debate and innovative thinking about sustainable development.

Trusteeship Council

The Trusteeship Council was established in 1945 and had the mission, according to Chapter XIII of the Charter of the United Nations, to internationally supervise the 11 Trust Territories, placed under the administration of 7 Member States, and to ensure that they were prepared for autonomy and independence. In 1994, all the Trust Territories had obtained autonomy and independence, so the Trusteeship Council suspended its operations on November 1 of that year. Through a resolution, the Council amended its Regulations to eliminate the obligation to meet annually and agreed to meet as the occasion required -- by its own decision or the President, or at the request of the majority of the members of the General Assembly or the Security Council.

International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice is the main judicial body of the United Nations. Its headquarters are in the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands). It is the only one of the six main organs of the Organization that is not located in New York. Its function is to resolve, in accordance with international law, the legal disputes presented before it by the different States and to issue advisory opinions on the legal issues that the authorized bodies and special agencies raise it. The International Court of Justice operates in accordance with its Statute.

Secretariat

The Secretariat is headed by the Secretary General and is made up of tens of thousands of international staff members, who work at different destination stations around the world, carrying out the work stipulated by the General Assembly and the other main bodies on a daily basis. The Secretary General is the Chief Administrative Officer of the Organization. The Secretary-General is the symbol of the ideals of the United Nations and spokesman for the interests of the peoples of the world, in particular the poor and vulnerable.

UN personnel are recruited internationally and locally, and work at duty stations and in peacekeeping missions around the world. But serving the cause of peace in a violent world is a dangerous occupation. Since the founding of the United Nations, hundreds of self-sacrificing men and women have lost their lives in the service of the cause of peace

Countries that participate in the MUN

República de China

República Popular China

Francia

Unión de Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas

Federación de Rusia

Reino Unido de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda del Norte

Estados Unidos de América

Argentina

Brasil

República Socialista Soviética de Bielorrusa

Belarús

Chile

Cuba

República Checa y Eslovaquia

Dinamarca

República Dominicana

Egipto

El Salvador

Haiti

Irán

Líbano

Luxemburgo

Nicaragua

Paraguay

Mancomunidad de Filipinas	Filipinas

Polonia

Arabia Saudita

Siria

Turquía

Türkiye

República Socialista Soviética Ucrania

Yugoslavia

Bosnia y Herzegovina, Croacia, Montenegro, Serbia, Eslovenia y Macedonia del Norte

Australia

Bolivia

Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia

Canadá

Colombia

Costa Rica

Ecuador

Etiopía

Grecia

Guatemala

India

Iraq

Liberia

México

Países Bajos

Noruega

Panamá

Perú

Sudáfrica

Uruguay

Venezuela
