Xinjiang is a territory in northwest China that is home to many ethnic minority groups including 11 million Uighur's. Uighur's are a Muslim Turkish minority group who since 2017 have been targeted by the Chinese government because of their religion and culture. China claims that Uighur's are a threat to security and have terrorist views even though there is not enough evidence to prove this. As a result of these claims against the Uighur's, China has passed laws stopping men from growing long beards and women from wearing veils or hijabs and they’ve also been closing and demolishing many mosques around the country. On top of this since 2017 China has been forcing at least 1 million Uighur's to live in camps that the Chinese government say are “re-education centers” however there have been multiple stories and proof that people are forced to do work and are being interrogated and sometimes beaten and are not being allowed to leave. The Chinese government are forcing the Uighur's to change their beliefs and are trying to take away these peoples religion and culture. In response to this many countries around the world are condemning the Chinese government for making these camps however there are also other countries who are on China’s side and say that they believe China is doing the right thing. Despite all of the criticism they have received, the Chinese government is still imprisoning the Uighur's in these camps and have stated that what they are doing is no different to what other countries around the world do.
