I used to say that formative assessment was the same thing as the exit ticket at the end of my lesson. Now I say formative assessment can be a lot of different activities that I use to gauge student learning. Most importantly is that when I formatively assess I must take some sort of action to meet the needs of students that the data identifies.

I am working on reading, writing, speaking, and listening every class, so making sure that I am tracking data is so important!

Saeli: I used to say that formative assessment was my job. Now I say that the best formative assessment is done by students evaluating themselves and what they still need to learn.

I used to say that a formative assessment needed to also have points attached or be written. I learned I got more from listening to students. I am getting better at facilitating and using the time to sit with individual students

LB: I used to say that formative assessment could only be done in one format and had to be graded daily. I now understand there are multiple ways to assess (discussion, four corners, individual white boards)that can be used to formatively assess students.

I use to say formative assessment was at the end of every lesson. I now know formative assessment is a discussion during the lesson with the class, groupsof students or the individual student to see what they understand.
