Andrew Carnegie was born in Scotland to a poor family with a father who was a weaver and a mother who did sewing work. This is the business that Carnegie was supposed to go into. Poverty affected him on a personal level, so this fueled the fire to make something of himself. He worked entire life earning the skills to build a mass business. Carnegie worked in a Pittsburgh cotton factory as a child until he was given the position of division superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1859!

Carnegie was different than the other robber barons because he preached for the rights of laborers to unionize and to protect their jobs. The kicker is that Carnegie's words never matched his actions because he manipulated many people to gain the riches he did.

Andrew Carnegie worked in the railroad, but in the middle of this he invested in various ventures, including iron and oil companies. By the time the 1870s came around, he entered the steel business. As time passed, the business was changed by the new steel refining process called the Bessemer process to convert huge batches of iron into steel, which was much more flexible than brittle iron. This took the steel industry by storm and this process is how he made his fortune.
