Anne Boleyn's (sometimes spelled Bullen), date of birth can only generally be guessed at but historians generally agree it was sometime in 1501. She was born in Norfolk to her father Earl Thomas Boleyn. Growing up she had an older sister, Mary, and a younger brother, George Boleyn. When she was old enough, both her and her sisters were ladies-in-waiting in many different courts throughout Europe, but both Anne and Mary spent most of their time in the French Courts.

Anne Boleyn moved to Hampton court as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Katharine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife. In court, Henry noticed Anne at a masque and immediately began to court her. He sent her love letters, especially, when they could not be together. Their relationship advanced to the point where Henry offered Anne the position of "official King's mistress", however, she declined, and told him that she would take being Queen or nothing at all.

One of the most notable accomplishment's of Anne Boleyn is forwarding the Protestant Reformation in England. A fan of the works of Martin Luther, Anne knew she could not only use the writings to enlighten Englands beliefs, but could also use it to make herself Queen. While personal gain was a motivating factor, it was Anne Boleyn that led Henry to forming the Church of England, and breaking free from the Catholicism and the Vatican that had previously ruled over Europe. The introduction of the Church of England i what would ultimately lead the Pilgrim's to leaving England. Also, despite having a French-like love for fashion and the finer things, she also frequently donated to charities, was an avid reader, and was a very dignified queen.

Death

The reason for Anne Boleyn's death was both misogynistic and no fault of her own. Despite Anne having brought Henry a living, legitimate, child, the sex of the child was not what was desired. Anne Boleyn ended up getting pregnant twice more but losing both children, never providing her husband with a son. Not only that, Henry had recently set his sights on the young Jane Seymour, and knew he wouldn't be able to divorce yet another queen. Naturally, King Henry VII then saw to it that Anne Boleyn was sentenced to death on charges of witchcraft, adultery, and even incest with her brother George Boleyn. She was kept in the Tower of London until she was beheaded May 19th, 1536.

A Dirty Legacy

Many remember Queen Anne Boleyn not as a woman who ushered in a new age for England, the mother of the greatest Queen recorded, or as a charitable woman, but as a spoiled, scheming, adulteress. The reason for this legacy is merely the opinion of the people at the time. From the commoner's point of view, Anne Boleyn was a French woman who came in to the castle and replaced the beloved Katharine of Aragon. Katharine was Catholic, pious, and familiar to the people, while Anne was young, vivacious, and enjoyed to dance and party just as much as she did reading. Also contributing to her remembrance is Anne's older sister Mary or known in France as "The King's Mare". She had also even been sexually involved with Henry before Anne came around. This was lead people to believe that if one Boleyn was a whore, so would the other. Either way, Anne Boleyn will forever be known for her lack of head or for her public image. I hope this was a look behind the curtain of Anne Boleyn.
