Long Arm /PAL/Project Based placement with Charity - NHs FV/Napier/Charity collaboration

A very successful Long Arm/PAL/Project based placement was completed between NHS FV, Sporting Memories Sporting Memories | Reminisce. Replay. Reconnect and Napier. This was based in Fife and supervised by myself in Forth Valley. A blog was produced and has been shared through AHP Scot Blog “Exploring the benefits of engaging with meaningful and purposeful activity through Sporting Memories.” – AHPs across health and social care.

Additionally the student produced a fantastic newspaper article to demonstrate their project findings - this was the decided media as used by Sporting memories to share weekly news in groups.

Co-facilitated with RGU a taster session on Teams with AHPs in Moray exploring barriers to offering placements within the region and considering alternative, contemporary placement models. New OT placement offered within Public Health in NHS Tayside. Remote, project-based placement, overseen by a PH consultant with long-arm supervision provided by AHP Lead, who is an OT by background. Placement split with a clinical setting in Grampian.

PE Team within GGC facilitated a 7 week OT PAL project based placement. The placement was a great success, and evaluated well! PEL now has first hand experience of this type of placement, therefore can use to share and promote different models of PrBL among other AHPs.

Facilitating modified PEEP: NHS Lothian OH Physio

NHS Lothian Occupational Health Physiotherapy Service reached out for support for PAL placements across 3 different sites. As part of their pilot blended timetable they added a peer-led project element and I facilitated a series of 5 on-line sessions using a modified Peer Enhanced E-Placement (PEEP) approach for all their students. The OH Physio Service now plan to take the lead with this approach for future placements - and have invited MSK physio students to join.

NHS Lothian Orthoptic Service - Facilitating Learning Capability

The PEL team were invited to support a development day for NHS Lothian's Orthoptic Service around facilitating learning. As such, I facilitated an in-person workshop to 15 members of staff exploring the Facilitating Learning section of the NMAHP Development Needs Analysis Tool (DNAT) along with the new AHP Practice Education Development Framework. The team found this really helpful and plan to use both tools to inform future appraisals.

First stage Scoping exercise carried out mapping by WTE all placement weeks for all programmes including paramedics and college programmes. This was illustrated by programme/by profession/by HSCP to view equity/apportionment across services. Next step is to scope provision by profession to identify teams supporting and teams not. As part of our AHP Workforce Group- HCSWs is a stand alone priority workstream. Following on from a detailed HCSW survey to gather baseline data a local update newsletter was launched and a study day incorporating sessions on Practice Supervision and national resources took place

National Overview of Placement Calendar for academic year

Our local AHP Senior Leadership team have identified that it would be useful to have a national calendar that provided by HEI and by programme the placement blocks for the coming academic year

This would facilitate local boards to then have an overview of all programmes/HEIs which would provide data on periods of greatest demand facilitate them in making /spreading local offers across their HSCP workforce and professions

Our local offers could then be mapped to this which would also facilitate potentially increasing offers and promoting/coordinating inter-professional learning and working opportunities

It makes sense to have the national overview in place that can be shared with boards to facilitate local plans - this emerged from our recent scoping paper and subsequent discussions with managers and leaders
