This unit will start with a laboratory about sunlight angles. When sunlight enters the Earth system, most of it passes through the atmosphere and reaches the surface, some is then reflected back to space and the remainder is absorbed, heating the ground. Due to earth´s rotation and revolving, this heating is uneven and can vary a great deal over a small area. These variations help produce distinct microclimates which are places, in the same area, with different temperature, humidity, light, and wind speed. Microclimates might definitely affect the rate of ecosystem processes such as photosynthesis, nutrient cycling and decomposition which finally determine the survival of plant and animal communities in the planet. In the same way, moon´s rotation around the earth causes high and low tides affecting human life in different ways. This unit is based on the global context orientation in time and space and it looks for letting students to explore how life maintenance is a consequence of the earth´s place in relation to the solar system, the Milky Way galaxy, and the universe. There is a strong emphasis on a systems approach and using models to explain the cyclical patterns of eclipses, tides, and seasons. The crosscutting concepts of patterns, scale, proportion, and quantity and systems and systems models provide a framework for understanding the disciplinary core ideas. Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in developing and using models and analyzing and interpreting data. Students are also expected to use these practices to demonstrate understanding of the core ideas. Assessment is going to be mainly based on criteria A, C and D.
