Children who think to act upon their unique tastes, or people who simply cannot afford what everyone else has, these people have always been ridiculed and second guessed in our society even into adult hood. It is simply the modern social food chain, it is how life has always been and will continue to be. Even if you've never seen it happen or have experienced it personally doesn't mean it doesn't happen behind closed doors or when you aren't looking. In recent years due to many different factors and elements, the social food chain has become lethal, violent and deadly. Some children with serious mental health issues submit to dark urges to hurt their classmates, sometimes even kill. The school system is taking this problem into consideration, studying it, then putting a band aid on the deaths of children and waiting for the media to move on so everyone else can to. The schools are reacting to shootings by saying "My how sad, now we increase security and pray it never happens again", but what happens when it happens again? what do they do when it happens again, when children are killed because X,Y, and Z, will they increase security or search for the root of the problem. You may be wondering "well whats the school supposed to do?" the school can do plenty to change its environment. The school could hire competent guidance counselors, or make help more accessible during class room hours, maybe even, dare I say, be more understanding of children problems and look at children as people instead of numbers on the screen waiting to make your paycheck.
