Many of these drunk husbands became abusive to their wives. Tom was drunk when he struck Myrtle. Alcohol impairs judgement, so he may have had better self-control had he not been drunk. She was one of the many victims of alcohol abuse. He was tempted to drink more. Alcohol is addictive. Nick has now become addicted to alcohol at this point in the book. He has accepted that this is how wealthy people live, and he wants to be a part of this lifestyle.
