"I have been drunk just twice in my life and the second time was that afternoon, so everything that happened has a dim hazy cast over it although until after eight o'clock the apartment was full of cheerful sun."-Nick (Fitzgerald, 33)

Nick did not drink often, either for personal preferences or because of Prohibition. The fact that Nick is getting drunk at a party means that he is beginning to lavish in the lifestyle of his friends; the lifestyle that he is trying to achieve.

The Prohibition movement was strongly supported by women. This was mostly due to them having to deal with their drunk husbands. Many of these drunk husbands became abusive to their wives. Tom was drunk when he struck Myrtle. Alcohol impairs judgement, so he may have had better self-control had he not been drunk. She was one of the many victims of alcohol abuse. This is an example of a negative impact of alcohol, and this event backs the importance of Prohibition.

"She had a drunk quantity of champagne and during the course of her song she had decided ineptly that everything was very very sad-she was not only singing, she was weeping too."-Nick (Fitzgerald, 55-56)

Alcohol brings out emotions differently in people. In the singer, she began crying because of the alcohol. The woman seems to be incredibly sad about something in her life that came out when she began drinking at the party. This shows that not everyone who lives like this is actually happy.

The enormous amount of alcohol being consumed was so immense that higher class people were making a fool of themselves. No one seemed to care sense majority of the people were drunk as well. This goes to show how alcohol effects human behavior and take over the mind

Alcohol is addictive. Nick has now become addicted to alcohol at this point in the book. He has accepted that this is how wealthy people live, and he wants to be a part of this lifestyle. He does not fight this tempting and extravagant lifestyle.
