Social workers provide appropriate advice, support and resources to individuals who are experiencing personal difficulties to help them overcome their problems.
They need an understanding of the criminal justice system, as well as being able to recognise social issues which a degree in criminology would aid.
They must liaise with relatives, colleagues and other professionals using speaking skills that we have developed during university. Furthermore, report writing is a big aspect of the job which we have skills in due to our assessments.

They also have to attend or contribute towards court cases, so a good understanding of how the courts are structured and run would be of great benefit and a potential asset to respective employers.
Finally, they arrange appropriate care, resources and benefits for clients. Through our working with criminology module we have had inputs from other agencies which social workers may need to contact, such as housing. This is useful as we can use these links and our knowledge to make the correct connections for clients.

Ellie-Rose Henry

A security guard is someone hired by a company or organisation to protect a building against intruders or damage, and hence aims to stop crime before it occurs. They also are responsible for maintaining the security of individuals, this could include a security guard at a nightclub, whose role is to protect under age people and those who are intoxicated. Security guards are required to handle a wide range of different situations. An example of this is a security guard at a shopping centre, there role is to prevent any theft from occurring, or catching those whom commit that crime, and they then have to make the decision whether to ring the police, or handle it between themselves. If they choose the latter, it prevents any police action and the potential cost of court case. They must also be approachable, as then others may come forward and report deviant or criminal behaviour to them.

A family support worker's role is to support and assist families who are experiencing problems in the family unit, this may include relationship issues, children's behavioral issues or family bonding issues. The main aim of a family support worker is to keep a family together. Often in cases where a family support worker is called upon by the local authority it is because of crime, if the child is offending and the parents can't cope or that the parents are offending and are not putting the child first. Another issue that may be happening in the family is domestic abuse, this is where a criminology degree would come in useful because you are able to gain lots of knowledge in certain areas and give targeted help to families and be more likely for that to be successful.

Jess Eddon

When working within the Youth Offending Team, you need a level of perseverance as you are often working with children and young adults that have had a harder way of life and may be difficult to communicate with. This is something that is taught within Criminology as we are taught about the difficulties in certain situation within these careers. Another criminological skill that can be used when working in the Youth Offending Team is teamwork. Team members often have to work with other services such as courts, education and probation, amongst other services. By communicating effectively with these other services, this allows the young offender to integrate into society after incarceration much more smoothly as well as making sure they are on good behaviour whilst in a young offenders’ prison. Previous volunteer work (preferably with young people) is often sought after as it develops more social skills.

Leah Cliff

A child Psychologist examines the mental and social development of children, they work in either therapeutic or research settings, analysing children as young as infants and toddlers, and as old as adolescents. Child psychologists refer patients and their parents to psychiatrists when they feel medicine is necessary, and help their clients assess their emotional responses to medication once they start taking it. Though most psychologists can treat children, what makes a person stand out in this position is their creative mind and dedication to helping kids. It is important to have a non-judgemental attitude when treating and speaking to the children/adolescents as they need to be able to trust you, also being able to listen and advise their clients when necessary. Criminology skills would come in useful, as in this role duties may include testifying before a jury about the kinds of development pressure that could lead a teen to act out and violate the law. They also help schools implement programs to identify at-risk youths before their psychological issues turn to violence.

Megan Davies

These workers are required to be passionate and enthusiastic about helping groups and individuals to improve the way they live. The job involves helping the community to identify the issues they may be facing, coming up with solutions or goals for them to work towards and responding to any potential problems they might come across. This is relevant to criminology skills as the individuals or groups who may need help might have been in trouble with the law previously and are looking to change their outlook on life through positive actions. A community development worker can help assist them with this by using the right amount encouragement and putting together appropriate plans and goals for them to work towards and achieve. They also act as the link between the community and other authorities such as the police, teachers and social workers.

Imogen Guymer

In society there will always be vulnerable people who are more at risk of being victimised, whether it be due to disability (learning and physical), locality, social class, etc. This line of work aims to protect these members of society, who are usually disabled, with the input of care assistants, etc. The responsibilities of this role are not limited to personal care, but often many vulnerable people require financial advice, organisational guidance, physical rehabilitation, as well as simply emotional support or psychiatric help. Many vulnerable people who are involved with care or institutions of this kind are at a higher risk of being victimised and often already have been, so the aim is to prevent this as well as committing any offences themselves. This is relevant to criminology in relation to protecting society and its individuals, as well as providing a quality of life that might not be achievable without intervention.

Jen Hamilton

Domestic violence is something that has been around for years and is still a huge problem in today's society and it isn't just going to go away. A lot of people just associate domestic violence with physical abuse, however there are multiple aspects to domestic violence such as emotional and psychological harm. This is related to criminology as victims need support and providing information on victims’ legal rights and their protection.

Brittany Hall
