They can draw and make connections to other things they're learning in school. The challenge is to stay on track with where the discussions go- it is fine to talk about things off topic to get the students attention and interests. But it is always great to relate the interests of the students and what they're learning in school to your discussion.

I think that it allows students to extend their understanding of concepts and to take a step back and see what they need to work on next.
