I think utilizing time In the classroom during discussions is a very critical time when the students have the freedom to expand their knowledge outside of what is being taught in the lesson. They can draw and make connections to other things they're learning in school. The challenge is to stay on track with where the discussions go- it is fine to talk about things off topic to get the students attention and interests. But it is always great to relate the interests of the students and what they're learning in school to your discussion.

- Marco

I too think this goes both ways. I think that it is good to support personal beliefs but if you mean beliefs as in going against what the students are learning and the factual evidence on how they are learning it could become an issue. I think we must clarify the term belief in the classroom, and how it applies to how we learn and the learning habits we use.

In the JUMP program I team teach everyday with my colleague. There are several norms that we incorporate in our professional relationship to keep the partnership strong, reliable, and working towards the same goal of student support and success. The most important norm in our relationship is listening fully to one another when we are sharing ideas or frustrations. Usually this is followed by questioning to further the thought.

Being open to new ideas, flexible to an ever changing environment, and welcoming to new voices in the discussion is the path to building a stronger team. If the environment is closed and rigid, then people will hesitate to share ideas, and there will be missed opportunities to strengthen the learning environment for the students. --Brad
