Student Feedback - Repetition and Overlap by Luke Kelleher

Content Overlap and Assessment Methods:
Students have identified content overlap among some modules, specifically noting repetition of material.
Feedback on assessment methods is mixed, with suggestions to balance individual and group work assessments more effectively.
Questions
How can we better identify overlapping content between related modules to avoid repetition?
How do we deal with repetition?
What strategies can we implement to balance individual and group work assessments more effectively, ensuring fair and accurate evaluation of student performance?

Ana: A higher percentage of the total grade should be assigned to individual assignments. This is a challenge given the number of students is each module, but obviously it is the only way to ensure a fair grading procedure.

It is not clear from the student feedback whether this is necessary constructive ovelap or not. Some overlap is desirable as skills and knowledge are honed across years. More specificaly, in designing the advanced transport planning stage 4 module I included the 'four stage' transport planning model, which feedback has suggested occurs elsewhere, but I did not find the topic in module descriptors.

Tadhg.

Having a list of topics/concepts covered during each course and identifying repetitions. I think PD has a better idea of the topics that are repeated. Each MC could decide to cover a specific aspect of the topic based on their discipline (e.g. TOD I cover urban design aspect in stage 4 - other MC introduces the topic in stage 2/3).

Maybe a separate discussion on this between module co-ordinators, so that there is a more fine grained identification of what is being dealt with in specific modules. Module descriptors of their nature tend to be broad brush.

There is also a need for module co-ordinators to be able to remind students - where they have studied something before. So that students are then aware that we are either building on or just referring back to previous work. So it's good to know what others are actually delivering. I think this should be more apparent now that all the modules have been taught at least once.

I would also point out, from experience that there is often a criticism of overlap from students - but sometimes when you drill down - there is a clear advancement of knowledge occurring in relation to how the topic is being dealt with.

Paula
