The irony is that he uses poor grammar and syntax, despite being a renowned poet. He shows that a perfect language is not required to get a message across.

Language:

Vocabulary:

He uses slang. fx. “de” instead of “the” and “ent” instead of “ain’t”

Although he uses words like “Suffix” he still uses slang words like “wit”, “mih” “yu”.

Broken english. We believe that he speaks english fluently, but uses broken english to prove his point

Grammar:

He uses slash as an enter. There are no commas or full stops/dots. Though he uses correct apostrophe and word order. His sentences doesn’t make sense because of his vocabulary, and therefore missing word sometimes ex “I bashing future wit present tense”. Here the word “am” is missing, and should be placed behind “I”. (And wit = with)

Sentence structure:

He sometimes split up the sentences with / but leaves out commas and periods.

The effect is that it sounds more like a rhythm.

He uses backslash when he uses the word “split”, where he ironically splits up the sentence when saying “split”.

THE PERSONA

The writer of the poem, John Agard, is also the persona of the poem, making it a first person speaker. We know that the persona is an immigrant, from line 2 and 5 where he says: “Me a simple immigrant” and “I immigrate.” Mr. Oxford Don, the person the persona is speaking to, gives the poem a contrast, portraying a more educated man, warning him, that the persona is not dangerous even though the general prejudice tells him so. This can be seen in line 29-30. The poem is spoken in low tone.
